Randolph Community College’s ESTC Hosts Tactical Tracker School, Tactical Defense Academy
Randolph County and Asheboro City police officers and National
Guardsmen from as far away as Indiana benefited from some unique
training opportunities at Randolph Community College’s Emergency
Services Training Center this week.
Twenty-four members of the Indiana National Guard were in Asheboro for two weeks to take part in Tactical Mantracking for Law Enforcement, Level I and Level II, training with Lawrence Wilkinson, president of the Tactical Tracker Training School in Angier, N.C.
The National Guardsmen stayed in local hotels and ate at local restaurants, contributing to the economy, noted Paul Goins, RCC’s Basic Law Enforcement Training director and coordinator of continuing education criminal justice classes. “The county’s investment in this training facility is paying off,” he said. Goins said the training focuses on giving members of the armed forces, law enforcement, homeland security, and search/recovery personnel the skills and confidence to track in any terrain.
In addition, Asheboro Police Department officers, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office deputies and several other agencies took part in a Tactical Defense Academy at the ESTC using a 180-degree virtual shooting simulator. The simulator replicates real-life deadly force situations utilizing hundreds of different possible scenarios. Users wear a belt that “shocks” them if they sustain virtual wounds. Verbal interaction with the computer system can determine scenario outcomes.

“Career Launch” for Graduating High School Students Set for May 20 at RCC
Randolph Community College’s Workforce Development & Continuing
Education Division is planning a Career Launch session from 6-9 p.m. on
Tuesday, May 20, for graduating high school students who are unsure of
their next step. The session will be held in the RCC Continuing
Education and Industrial Center at 413 Industrial Park Avenue.
Students can explore opportunities in a number of areas, including Accelerated Machining, Career College, College & Career Readiness, EMS, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Fire Academy, HVAC/Maintenance Mechanic/Electrical, Manicurist, Masonry and Carpentry, and Welding. These numerous programs and training courses can help students prepare for a job without having to enroll in a degree program.
Interested students and parents will have the time to discuss class options, explore employment potential, register for fall 2014 classes, and apply for scholarships. “All of the Workforce Development and Continuing Education programs are fast-tracked to careers and jobs, so several local and regional employers recruit from our population of job-ready and well-trained students,” said Bryle Hatch, coordinator of workforce development for RCC. In addition, he noted, several of the classes provide CE-to-CU credit, meaning that after a student successfully completes the continuing education course, they already have curriculum credit toward a degree, if and when they choose to pursue one at RCC.
For more information on the Career Launch session, contact RCC at 336-633-0268.

Eleven Complete 7th Randolph Community College Student Leadership Academy
Eleven students graduated from Randolph Community College’s seventh
annual Student Leadership Academy on March 18. The students were chosen
for the Academy based on a competitive process that considered
leadership experience, leadership potential, and a letter of reference
from a faculty member.
Dr. Brenda Kays, president of Stanly Community College, was the keynote speaker at Tuesday’s graduation ceremony held in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium. Kays talked to the students about three “pearls of wisdom” that had inspired her during her 29 years working at community colleges. Kays said the advice included “picking your battles wisely,” from a vice president at her first college job. He wanted her to understand that “you can’t fix everything at once,” she said, “and I learned the fine art of compromise and collaboration along the way.” After a particularly grueling board meeting at another college, she asked the president how he stood that level of diversity. He told her, “If everyone is always 100% satisfied and happy with what you are doing, you are probably not doing your job,” which taught her that a thick skin is necessary in a leadership position. The third “pearl” was “you either need to change your people or change your people.” She explained that change is difficult for people and that as a leader, you have the responsibility to lead people through that change, or get rid of them if they cannot change.
