RCC Trustee Jorge Lagueruela Honored by HPU

Jorge Lagueruela, founder and president of Trinity Furniture and a member of the Randolph Community College Board of Trustees, was honored as High Point University’s 2014 Alumnus of the Year during Alumni Weekend activities Oct. 10-12.
           
According to a statement from HPU, Lagueruela is “a member of HPU’s class of 1979. He has received many awards and accolades including four-time recipient of The Business Journal Fast 50, the U.S. Department of Commerce Exporter of the Year, two-time recipient of The Business Journal Top Ranked Hispanic Business of the Year, and the HPU Award for Distinguished Service to his Profession. An active board member with the Archdale-Trinity YMCA, Lagueruela is also very active with Hopewell United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees, chairman of several committees, and a member of the choir.”
           
Lagueruela was appointed to a four-year term on RCC’s Board of Trustees in November 2013 by N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory. He serves on the Board’s Budget & Finance/Building & Grounds Committee.

Navy Cross Recipient Joshua Moore to Speak at Randolph Community College Veterans Day Event

Marine Sgt. Joshua L. Moore, a recipient of the Navy Cross and a native of Franklinville, will be the guest speaker at Randolph Community College’s Veterans Day celebration on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m.-12 noon in the Corporate Training Center on RCC’s Asheboro Campus. The public is invited.

Duke Energy awards $242,540 to Randolph Community College

Duke Energy and the Randolph Community College Foundation today announced a $242,540 investment from the Duke Energy Foundation.

The funds will be used to support Randolph Community College’s Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) Technology classes under its Computer-Integrated Machining curriculum.

Fourteen Students Chosen for Randolph Community College Student Leadership Academy

Fourteen students have been chosen for Randolph Community College’s eighth annual Student Leadership Academy based on a competitive process that considered leadership experience, leadership potential, and a letter of reference from a faculty member. The group includes 12 traditional RCC students and two Randolph Early College High School students.

The participants completed their first session on Saturday, Sept. 27, which included team-building exercises led by Jeremy Jackson, associate director of camp operations at Camp Caraway, and his wife, Michelle; and a presentation by RCC President Robert S. Shackleford on the topic “What is Leadership.” A second session scheduled for Oct. 9 will include a presentation on group dynamics by Dr. Joanne Buck, department chair for English and Humanities at Guilford Technical Community College; and a session on Servant Leadership by Dr. J.W. Kelley, RCC vice president for student services.

RCC Cosmetology Student Wins $1,000 Scholarship from Matrix

Randolph Community College Cosmetology student Jennifer Matney of Franklinville was the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from Matrix, a leading professional haircare and haircolor company in the United States and part of L’Oreal USA’s Professional Products Division.
           
Matney was one of 50 students from around the United States who were awarded $1,000 scholarships in the Matrix Imagine All You Can Be Scholarship Contest. Entrants, who were required to be a student of an accredited beauty school located in the United States, were asked to create a 45- to 90-second video essay around the theme “What I Imagine I Can Be.” Matrix asked that the video address the entrant’s goals, dreams and passions once they graduate from cosmetology school.

Randolph Community College BLET/Criminal Justice/UNCP Info Session Oct. 27

Randolph Community College will host an information session on Monday, Oct. 27, to answer questions about the College’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and Criminal Justice Technology programs, and RCC’s transfer agreement with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke for Criminal Justice associate degree graduates.
