Randolph Community College’s Archdale Welding Center has been named an Accredited Testing Facility (ATF) by the American Welding Society. The AWS Accredited Test Facility program establishes minimum requirements for test facilities, their personnel and equipment to qualify for accreditation to test and qualify welders. RCC’s testing program can test welders from anyone of eight different codes and standards.
The designation means that RCC’s Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) can test welders for the American Welding Society certifications that are recognized anywhere in the world, said Michael Ford, department head and CWI for Welding Technology at RCC. Ford said it took over a year of work to gain the certification, which included implementing a quality assurance program and writing a Quality Manual that controls the activities related to the testing of welders.

As is tradition during the fall convocation, President Robert S. Shackleford introduced his Presidential Initiatives. Last year, Dr. Shackleford revealed the Framework for Great planning process, which identified initiatives that would cover three years, with new focus area strategies each year. This is the second year of the three-year planning cycle. Shackleford said this “integrated planning process helps to push the College forward by making sure we are all working in the same direction.”

RCC Board of Trustees Approves General Contractor for Allied Health Center
Randolph Community College’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved the general contractor for the $14.5 million Allied Health Center during its regular meeting on Thursday, July 19, held in the Martha Luck Comer Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus.
Clancy & Theys Construction Company from Charlotte was the low bidder with a final construction price of $10,929,762 and was recommended to the Board of Trustees by the architect, Little Diversified Architectural Consulting. An alternate contractor was approved by the Board in the unlikely event that the College and State Construction Office cannot negotiate a contract with the first bidder — the second lowest bidder was WC Construction of Winston-Salem.
The bid opening was held on July 12, and six complete bids were received. The College postponed a planned groundbreaking earlier this year because not enough bids had been received. A new date for the groundbreaking is expected to be announced soon.

Randolph Community College Photojournalism Students Create Short Documentary Film
Randolph Community College’s photojournalism class recently created a short documentary project that was an official selection for the Long Leaf Festival in May at the North Carolina Museum of History. The weekend festival highlighted the best short- and feature-length documentary and narrative films that demonstrate a Tar Heel State connection.
“Carolina Cross,” the Photographic Technology students’ documentary on the 2017-2018 North Carolina Cyclo-Cross season, was also shown at the Praxis Film Festival in Goldsboro in May. Films selected for screening at Praxis are high quality independent films from across the United States and around the world.
Praxis organizers invited RCC Photojournalism instructor Jay Capers and RCC students Khadejeh Nikouyeh of Greensboro and Becca Benson of Raleigh to be part of a panel for festivalgoers and area high school students about filmmaking, according to Kevin Eames, department head for Photographic Technology at RCC. “The short documentary was shown with two pieces by Khadejeh as part of the eight films being discussed after viewing,” said Eames. “Also on the panel were instructors from Duke University and Elon University, an actress, filmmakers, and a graduate from the Savannah College of Art and Design.”

Third Randolph County “Pathways to Prosperity” Project Will Focus on Agriculture
Asheboro City Schools, Randolph Community College, and the Randolph County School System unveiled a third pathway focusing on agriculture in their partnership project, Pathways to Prosperity, at a joint press conference on Tuesday, April 10 in RCC’s R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center Auditorium on the Asheboro Campus.
The project will include the development of a new associate degree in Agribusiness Technology at Randolph Community College, said Suzanne Rohrbaugh, vice president for instruction at RCC, during the event. RCC will be working with local employers, high schools, and regional universities to develop associated career pathways to ensure the greatest articulation, according to the plan released today. The goal is to have the curriculum developed by the end of the 2017-18 school year so that an application can be submitted to the North Carolina Community College System for approval. The earliest date for launching the new curriculum would be fall 2019.
Personnel from all three school systems, industry partners, and intermediary agencies have been working on the Agricultural Pathways to Prosperity Plan for months. According to the Pathways to Prosperity Leadership Team, a strong agricultural climate in Randolph County, a demand for skilled workers, partnered with the increased interest in agriculture-related middle and high school classes and clubs helped them to select agriculture as their next pathway.
