Ever wanted to know the theory and operating principles of small two-
and four-stroke gasoline engines? And be able to service and repair
them? Randolph Community College will offer a course in the fundamentals
of Small Engine Mechanics beginning Monday, June 11 at the Asheboro
Campus.
This course will provide an introduction to
the parts and operation of small gasoline engines normally found on
push mowers, riding mowers, small tractors, garden tillers, blowers,
string trimmers, hedge trimmers, etc. The instructor will be Mark
Gilmore, owner of Goldston Small Engine Repair in Goldston, N.C. Mark
has over 10 years of experience in small engine repair.
The class will meet from 6-9 p.m., Mondays and Tuesdays, June 11

Randolph Community College Announces 2012 Spring Semester Honor Roll
Randolph Community College announces the President’s List, Dean’s List, and Honor List for the 2012 spring semester.
To be eligible, a student must complete at least 12 credit hours for the semester, excluding Developmental Studies hours and proficiency hours with no incompletes, and earn a grade point average of 4.0 for the President’s List, 3.50-3.99 for the Dean’s List, or 3.00-3.49 for the Honor List. Also, students who complete at least six but less than 12 credit hours for the semester and earn a grade point average of 3.00-4.00, excluding Developmental Studies hours and proficiency hours with no incompletes, are eligible for the Honor List.

Wheatmore High School Students Tour Randolph Community College Mobile Classroom
Students at Wheatmore High School in Trinity were among the first to
tour Randolph Community College’s new industrial automation mobile
classroom on May 24. The 44-foot-long, goose-neck trailer pulled by a
heavy-duty pickup truck was parked in front of the school’s cafeteria
for a couple of hours on Thursday so the students could tour on their
lunch hour. Several Wheatmore teachers also sent students from their
classes in shifts to tour the unique classroom, believed to be the first
of its kind in North Carolina, according to Tom Jones, Randolph
Community College Electrical/Electronics Technology instructor.

Sixty-One Graduate from Randolph Early College High School
Randolph Early College High School held its third annual commencement
exercises on Thursday, May 17 at Rushwood Park Wesleyan Church.
Sixty-one RECHS students crossed the stage to receive their high school
diplomas from the innovative high school located on Randolph Community
College’s Asheboro Campus.
Clark Adams, Randolph Community College English/communications instructor, gave the graduation address. Other speakers included Emily Smith, who gave the Valedictory address; Noah Delk, who gave the senior address; and Hector Campunzano, Student Government Association president. RCC President Robert Shackleford and Randolph County Schools Superintendent Donald Andrews also made remarks.
RECHS Principal Cathy Waddell presented the diplomas to the students.

Randolph Community College Foundation Presidential Scholars Named
Five elite Randolph County high school students have been chosen in a
competitive process to become Presidential Scholars at Randolph
Community College. Heather “Corrine” Cox of Trinity High School, Erin
“Rachel” Crotts of Neighbors Grove Christian Academy, Nathan Garner
Kiser of Southwestern Randolph High School, Laura “Chrissy” Latta of
Trinity High School, and Robert “Jonathan” Robbins of Asheboro High
School will receive two-year RCC scholarships in the new Presidential
Scholars program funded by the Randolph Community College Foundation.

Randolph Community College Archdale Center Offers Basic Word Course
Randolph Community College’s Archdale Center will offer a basic Microsoft Word course at the Archdale Center beginning June 4.
Students completing the Word Basic course will be proficient in using Microsoft Word by covering the following material: creating and editing a Word document, research paper, resumes, tables, charts, watermarks, mailing labels, and macros. This course includes introductory and intermediate levels.
The class will meet from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Mondays, June 4 through July 30. The registration fee is $67; a textbook will be required at an additional cost.

They include certification courses in areas such as emergency medical services, fire services, foods/hospitality, law enforcement, electrical, automotive inspection and safety, and welding. Personal enrichment classes include such topics as motorcycle safety, dance for fitness, painting, photography, pottery, sewing and stitchery, and self-defense.

Randolph Community College Outreach Providing New Opportunities for Residents
Randolph Community College’s efforts to provide classes closer to those
looking for training has been fulfilling a real need in several Randolph
County communities, including Ramseur and the East Side community of
Asheboro. On a recent morning in the city council chambers in the
Ramseur Municipal Building, 11 students were studying English as a
Second Language led by instructor Hector Rodriguez. The classes started
there in January.

Randolph Community College Adult High School Diploma/GED Spring Graduation Held May 14
Jacqueline “Jackie” Foster, an RCC GED graduate and 1994 RCC Criminal
Justice Technology graduate who is now a probation and parole officer
for the N.C. Division of Adult Corrections, was the keynote speaker at
Randolph Community College’s Adult High School Diploma/General
Educational Development (GED) spring graduation ceremony at 7 p.m. on
Monday, May 14, at the Asheboro High School Performing Arts Center.
The ceremony also included graduates from RCC’s Career College program, with certificates being presented by Tonya Monroe, coordinator/instructor for compensatory education. Career College is a 16-week, post-secondary certificate program for adults with learning challenges. This entry-level program provides a foundation for transitioning into a career or additional coursework.
Twenty-nine students participated in Monday’s ceremony out of 67 GED graduates, 11 Adult High School Diploma graduates, and three Career College graduates who were eligible in May.

Randolph Community College Curriculum Graduation Ceremony Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Randolph Community College’s 2012 Curriculum Graduation ceremony
celebrated the school’s 50th Anniversary with three special graduation
speakers and the participation of 50 alumni graduates who robed and led
the processional.
Keynote speakers for the ceremony were Dr. R. Scott Ralls, president of the North Carolina Community College System; North Carolina Senator Jerry Tillman; and Dr. Stuart B. Fountain, vice chair of the State Board of Community Colleges. Also making brief remarks was Dr. Lacy M. Presnell Jr., former Randolph County Schools superintendent (1961-1969) and the keynote speaker at RCC’s first formal graduation in 1964.
Dr. Robert S. Shackleford Jr., RCC president, gave the welcome, and Shane Bryson, Student Government Association president, made opening remarks.
The Curriculum ceremony took place at 7 p.m., May 9, at Asheboro High School gymnasium with approximately 223 students walking in the ceremony out of 459 associate degree, diploma, and certificate candidates this year.
The conferring of the degrees, diplomas and certificates was handled by F. Mac Sherrill, chairman of the RCC Board of Trustees. Faculty marshals for the 2012 ceremony were Jennifer L. Macy, Maria B. LeBaron, and Patrick Pardee.
RCC Student Ambassadors M. Todd Allman, Robert J. Cheek, Albert M. Jones, and Jon K. Tostoe served as graduation marshals.

Randolph Community College Hosts Hugh Morton Photography Exhibit
Randolph Community College’s Photographic Technology Department is
hosting an exhibit of Hugh Morton’s original photographic prints. Morton
was a well-known photojournalist and the owner of Grandfather Mountain
in Avery County, N.C. He died in 2006.
The free exhibit of 15 Morton photographs is open to the public in the Photography Imaging Center on RCC’s Asheboro Campus from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays – Thursdays, and 8 a.m. -2 p.m. on Fridays, now through July 23.
According to a biography on the Grandfather Mountain website, Morton’s photographs were first published in TIME Magazine over 70 years ago, and he has been published in every major national magazine since. He specialized in scenic photography, sports action and politics. His life’s work is now archived by the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill library, and there is a blog that features a daily posting of one of his negatives at www.lib.unc.edu/blogs/morton/.
RCC’s Asheboro Campus is located at 629 Industrial Park Avenue. Take the McDowell Road exit off of Highway 220 Bypass (I-73/I-74).

Randolph Community College Phi Beta Lambda Members Win State Awards
Randolph Community College’s chapter of Phi Beta Lambda won several
awards during the group’s State Leadership Conference in Charlotte in
April. Phi Beta Lambda is the post-secondary organization for Future
Business Leaders of America.

Randolph Community College Unveils Campus Portrait by William Mangum for 50th Anniversary
Randolph Community College hosted a formal unveiling of a portrait of
the RCC Asheboro Campus by acclaimed watercolorist William Mangum on May
1 in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium. The
portrait was commissioned to honor RCC’s 50th anniversary; the college
opened its doors for the first formal classes on Sept. 4, 1962.
