Five Randolph Community College employees completed the requirements of
the President’s Educational Leadership Academy recently at RCC.
This is the sixth class to participate in the Academy, which is
designed to help develop employee leadership skills. It was implemented
in spring 2011 as part of President Robert Shackleford’s presidential
initiatives. Employees participating this spring were Kevin Eames,
Photographic Technology instructor; Shelley Greene, associate vice
president for institutional advancement; Julie New, financial aid
specialist; Donna Perry, division chair for the Science, Technology,
Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) division; and Sharon Reynolds;
purchasing agent.

Randolph Community College Pottery Sale April 30-May 2
Randolph Community College’s Pottery students will host a Pottery Sale,
Tuesday through Thursday, April 30 through May 2, at the Pottery Center
on the Asheboro Campus. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday
and Wednesday, April 30 and May 1, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on
Thursday, May 2.
A large selection of fun and functional items made by the Pottery students will be available for the sale, which is open to the public.

Randolph Community College Archdale to Host SkillsUSA Welding Competition April 25
Randolph Community College’s Welding Technology program will host a
SkillsUSA Welding Competition at the Archdale Center on Thursday, April
25. The daylong event will involve approximately 20 post-secondary
student competitors and a four-part competition. It is not open to the
public.
SkillsUSA Championships is a showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through each state and national levels.
For those participating in the Welding SkillsUSA Contests, competitors receive contest drawings and a set of welding procedure specifications. All drawings, welding symbols, and welding terms conform to the latest edition of the American Welding Society standards. Through a series of stations, contestants are tested on various aspects of welding: measuring weld replicas, using weld measuring gauges; laying out a plate and using oxy-acetylene equipment to cut several holes that are checked for accuracy and quality; Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) on steel making welds in various positions using short circuiting transfers; Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) using a shielding gas, making welds in various positions and, using a combination machine capable of providing the correct welding current for shielded metal arc (SMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). Competitors complete the steel project and weld an aluminum project in various positions using a variety of filler metals.

Randolph Community College Recognized by N.C. Energy Office for Energy Savings
Randolph Community College was presented a 2013 Utility Savings
Initiative Leadership Award on April 16 by the North Carolina Energy
Office at the 10th Annual Sustainable Energy Conference at the McKimmon
Center in Raleigh.
RCC President Robert S. Shackleford accepted the award, which was presented to RCC for excellence in promoting Utility Savings Initiative principles.
North Carolina has mandated that all state agencies achieve a 30% reduction in energy consumption by 2015, according to Matthew Needham, RCC’s facilities and grounds conservation specialist. Although community colleges aren’t bound by these rules, RCC voluntarily met that challenge in the 2012-2013 school year.

Randolph Community College Compensatory Education Open Houses May 14 & 15 in Asheboro and Archdale
Randolph Community College’s Compensatory Education program will hold an
Open House on Tuesday, May 14 on the Asheboro Campus from 9 a.m.-12
p.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. in room VT-104 of the J.W. “Willie” Plummer
Vocational/Technical Center.
An Open House will also be held on Wednesday, May 15 on the Archdale Campus from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. in room A-105.

Humanitarian Carl Wilkens to Speak at Randolph Community College May 2
Carl Wilkens, director of the nonprofit organization World Outside My
Shoes, will be a guest speaker at Randolph Community College on
Thursday, May 2. Wilkens will speak twice, at 12:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., in
the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium on the Asheboro
Campus. World Outside My Shoes is a nonprofit organization working
towards ending genocide, racism, and intolerance.

Randolph Community College Nursing Assistant I Course Begins May 27
Randolph Community College will offer a Nursing Assistant I course
through its Corporate & Continuing Education division beginning
Monday, May 27. The course has been scheduled to make it convenient for
students who may be enrolling in nursing programs at four-year colleges
and universities or at RCC but who need to complete the Nursing
Assistant I requirement before admittance, said Amy Ange, Nursing
Assistant department head.
The eight-week course prepares graduates to provide personal care and perform basic skills in a variety of health care settings. The course includes class, lab, and clinical components. Upon satisfactory completion, the graduate is eligible to test for listing as a Nursing Assistant I on the N.C. Nurse Aid Registry at the N.C. Division of Facility Services.
Both daytime (8:30 a.m.-2 p.m.) and afternoon/evening (2:30-9 p.m.) sections are available. Students are urged to contact RCC immediately for an application and to learn about admission requirements, such as a physical examination, which must be completed before the student begins the course.
The cost of the course is $216.25; limited scholarship money may be available.

Greene, McCroskey Promoted to Key Advancement Positions at Randolph Community College

Shelley W. Greene was promoted to associate vice president for institutional advancement, after the retirement of Susan Milner. In addition, Lorie L. McCroskey has been promoted to director of development, a new position at the College.
As associate vice president for institutional advancement, Greene will oversee several key areas of support for the College, including resource development, the RCC Foundation, research, and marketing.
The new director of development will work with the RCC Foundation to secure external funding from federal, state, private, and local sources. McCroskey will also provide leadership and support for development activities, including donor appreciation events, fundraising events, and community cultivation events.

63 Students Inducted Into Phi Theta Kappa at Randolph Community College
Sixty-three students were welcomed into Beta Theta Rho, Randolph
Community College’s Five-Star Phi Theta Kappa chapter, during the spring
induction ceremony on Saturday, April 6, in the R. Alton Cox Learning
Resources Center auditorium on the Asheboro Campus.
James J. Popp, a 2006 graduate of RCC’s Associate in Arts (College Transfer) program and chair of the History Department at Southwestern Randolph High School, was the guest speaker. Popp, who was a Phi Theta Kappa member when he was a student at RCC, transferred to North Carolina A&T State University where he completed a bachelor’s degree in history in 2009 and a master’s degree in teaching in 2011.

Randolph Community College’s Beta Theta Rho Winds Up Semester With Regional Convention Awards
Members of Beta Theta Rho, Randolph Community College’s chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa, have been quite busy since January. Several students from
RCC’s PTK chapter attended the Phi Theta Kappa Carolinas Regional
Convention in Clemmons from March 22-24. Members from PTK chapters in
various North Carolina community colleges and South Carolina technical
colleges attended various workshops and seminars to learn more about the
mission and purpose of PTK.
Phi Theta Kappa is the only internationally acclaimed honor society serving two-year institutions that offer associate degree programs. PTK Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,280 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 135,000 students inducted annually. The Carolinas Region has 84 chapters between the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.

Affairs will host a Veterans Benefits Fair from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on
Thursday, April 11 in the Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro
Campus. The event is open to RCC students and the public.
“The goal is to provide information about services and benefits available to veterans and their families,” said Cathy Aikens, RCC financial aid specialist & VA certifying official. “It gives them a one-stop opportunity to speak with different organizations that may offer the assistance they are needing.”

Learn About Advanced Manufacturing Jobs at Randolph Community College Career Fair April 9
Randolph Community College will help celebrate North Carolina
Manufacturing Awareness Week, April 8-12, 2013, by hosting an Advanced
Manufacturing Career Fair on Tuesday, April 9, from 6-8 p.m. in the
Continuing Education and Industrial Center at 413 Industrial Park Avenue
on the Asheboro Campus. Representatives from several local industries
offering advanced manufacturing jobs will be in attendance. The public
is invited.
Advanced manufacturing is modern, sophisticated, and uses cutting edge technology to create products used in fields such as aviation, communications, and health care.
During the Career Fair, visitors can learn about training at RCC leading to careers in this field, talk to students and instructors in those programs, participate in hands-on demonstrations of advanced manufacturing equipment, meet with business and industry representatives to learn about high-paying jobs, and tour RCC’s new Continuing Education and Industrial Center.
Local industries participating include United Brassworks, Timken, Kennametal, Southern Precision Tools, Tobe Mfg. Co., Teleflex, SouthCorr, Acme McCrary, and Americhem. A representative from Randolph County Economic Development Corporation will also participate.
