Learn to Transform Old Furniture Pieces, Accessories in New Course Beginning Feb. 5 or March 12 at RCC Archdale Center

Want to breathe new life into old, worn-out furniture and accessories? Then join Randolph Community College's Archdale Center in this new Continuing Education course, Furniture Rehab 101: Transforming Old Pieces, with two sections beginning Feb. 5 and March 12. 

Students will learn decorative painting techniques that will transform a boring old piece into something fabulous! A chalk finish paint—which requires very little prep work and is easy to use even for the beginning refurbisher—will be used in this class.

Petty Family Foundation Donates Money for Scholarships at RCC

On Monday, Jan. 12, the Petty Family Foundation donated $6,000 to the Randolph Community College Foundation. The funds will be used to provide scholarships to local high school seniors who plan to enroll in Randolph Community College after graduation. The donation was made in honor of NASCAR legend Richard Petty’s wife Lynda, who passed away in March of last year.

“Lynda was all about education and what it could do for kids, so today was sort of a special way to honor that”, said Richard. “Our mom was very active in public education, and sat on the school board for sixteen years” added Petty’s daughter Rebecca Moffitt. “We knew that she would have wanted us to give back to our county schools.”

Learn to Build Websites with WordPress at RCC Archdale Center

Randolph Community College's Archdale Center will offer a Continuing Education course on Webpage Design Using WordPress beginning Tuesday, Feb. 3.

This class provides hands-on instruction to create a working website that's easy to maintain. Students use a free WordPress account and learn to use the WordPress Dashboard at home, work or school. There's no software to buy or install and no knowledge of HTML code is required.

WordPress would be a great choice for churches or nonprofits and can be shared with co-workers or staff. Students will learn to set-up and maintain a website, add content, blogs, pictures, videos and social media links. The course also covers how to buy a website name, choose a hosting company, add e-commerce, and get search engines like Google to find a website.

The class will meet on Tuesdays from 9 a.m.-12 noon, Feb. 3-March 24. The registration fee is $72. For more information or to register, contact the Archdale Center at 336-862-7980.

Randolph Community College Introduces High School Fire Academy

Randolph Community College, in collaboration with Randolph County Public Schools and county fire departments, will be starting a high school fire academy next month, according to Paul Goins, director of RCC's Emergency Services Training Center and BLET program. The program will provide high school students, age 16 years and older, an introduction to the fire service.

While taking part in this after-school program, students will be earning credits toward the completion of their North Carolina Firefighter certification. Classes will cover topics such as fire behavior, personal protective equipment, and emergency medical care.

RCC Honors Outstanding Faculty and Staff Member, Employee Years of Service at Spring Convocation

Randolph Community College honored Steven B. Maness as its 2015 Excellence in Teaching award winner and Bryle H. Hatch as the 2015 Staff Person of the Year during its Spring Convocation held Jan. 9 in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium.

RCC President Robert S. Shackleford welcomed the audience of over 200 faculty and staff members and several Board of Trustees and Foundation Board members to the official kick-off to the spring semester. He talked about the challenges facing the students during spring semester and asked the employees to think about what else they could give the students besides grades, certificates, and degrees. “Some of the most important things we need to give (the students) are not on our job descriptions,” he said, noting three influential people in his life who had given him gifts that would change his life: “hope, guidance, and motivation.”

RCC Adds Second BLET Class to Begin Feb. 9

Randolph Community College has added a second Basic Law Enforcement Training class section to begin Monday, Feb. 9. Anyone interested in attending should contact Paul Goins, director of RCC's Emergency Services Training Center and the BLET program, by Jan. 30 at 336-628-4552 or by email at pggoins@randolph.edu.

This daytime class will meet from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Basic Law Enforcement Training is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprise. This program utilizes state commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcoholic beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations.

Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study, which include the certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission, to receive a certificate.

In addition to the general admissions requirements for curriculum programs at RCC, additional admissions criteria apply.

Randolph Community College Foundation Seeks Applicants for Presidential Scholar Program

The Randolph Community College Foundation will award two-year RCC scholarships to five high school seniors in Randolph County in 2015 through its Presidential Scholar program. The students will be chosen in a competitive process that includes an application packet and interviews, according to Joyce Wolford, director of foundation operations. This is the fourth year of the program.

High school seniors from all Randolph County public, private, and home schools are invited to apply. To be considered, students must plan to enroll at RCC in the fall of 2015, have an unweighted GPA of at least 3.0, participate in extracurricular/community activities, and submit an application packet (application, two recommendations, and high school transcript) by 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13.
