RCC Foundation Seeks High School Leadership Participants

The Randolph Community College Foundation is seeking applicants for its second annual High School Leadership Academy, a leadership development program for rising ninth graders. The Randolph Community College High School Leadership Academy, which is modeled after RCC's college-level Student Leadership Academy, will be a one-day event that will focus on topics such as the definition of leadership; team building; personality types and leadership styles; social media, communication and leadership; conflict resolution; situational leadership; and servant leadership, according to Lorie McCroskey, RCC's director of development.

Rising freshmen who live and will attend school in Randolph County in the fall of 2015 and are in good academic standing are eligible to apply. The Academy will take place from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, at the Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus.

Interested students must complete an application form available from middle school counselors or at the Foundation office, write a brief essay on leadership, and submit two reference letters. Completed application packets are due back to the RCC Foundation by Friday, April 24, at 3 p.m.

Randolph Community College's Radiography Program Earns National Accreditation

The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) has awarded initial accreditation for a period of three years to Randolph Community College's Radiography program, College officials learned in late January. This is the maximum duration that may be awarded by JRCERT.

"Our Radiography program is a cornerstone in our health sciences programs, and we have been so pleased with the community's interest in it, " said Dr. Robert Shackleford, RCC president. "This accreditation gives us a stamp of approval that endorses the quality of the program and is a big plus for our students as they enter the workforce."

RCC Hosts FAFSA Day on Feb. 28

Randolph Community College will participate in FAFSA Day on Saturday, Feb. 28, in which college financial aid officers and other volunteers will help students complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms over the Internet. Completing the FAFSA form is a requirement to be considered for all federal and most state financial aid for college, including scholarships and grants. The FAFSA is also required for RCC Foundation Scholarships.

The FAFSA Day program is open to students who plan to attend college in the 2015-16 academic year and will be held at approximately 100 locations across North Carolina. RCC's event will be held from 9 a.m.-noon, Feb. 28, in Rooms 106 and 108 of the Continuing Education and Industrial Center on the Asheboro Campus.

18 Couples Chosen for 2015 Dancing with the Randolph Stars

The dancers for Randolph Community College Foundation’s 2015 Dancing with the Randolph Stars benefit include a mayor, a city councilman, two attorneys, a potter, two insurance agents, a pharmacist, a chef, a financial advisor, and several business owners. Their names were announced at a “Meet the Stars” event held at The Exchange Banquet and Meeting Hall on Jan. 25. The popular fundraiser raises money for student scholarships at Randolph Community College. Each couple will perform a short dance routine at the event on May 30.

RCC Student Chosen to Participate in NASA Aerospace Scholars Program

Randolph Community College student Laramie Lipman of Asheboro has been chosen to compete in NASA's National Community College Aerospace Scholars program. Out of 410 total participants, only 14 come from North Carolina.

National Community College Aerospace Scholars, or NCAS, is an interactive online learning opportunity highlighted by a three-day experience at NASA. Selected students are encouraged to study mathematics, science, engineering, and computer science by interacting with engineers at different NASA centers.

Five RCC Employees Complete Ninth President's Leadership Academy

Five Randolph Community College employees completed the requirements of the President's Educational Leadership Academy in the fall semester at RCC.

This is the ninth class to participate in the Academy, which is designed to help develop employee leadership skills. It was implemented in spring 2011 as part of President Robert Shackleford's presidential initiatives. Employees participating this fall were C. Ashley Moody, director of adult basic education and adult high school; Cathy D. Hefferin; assistant director of marketing for public information; C. Ryan Knight, instructor, English/reading; Sherri C. Davis, network administrator II; and Todd E. Thompson, department head, humanities/fine arts.

Snyder to Speak on the Future of Drones in N.C. at RCC March 19

Randolph Community College will be hosting guest speaker Kyle Snyder, director of Nextgen Air Transportation Program, on the subject of unmanned aerial vehicles and their future in North Carolina. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. The presentation will take place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium on the Asheboro Campus.

Snyder's work centers on networking researchers and educators with government and industry to prepare the state for future aviation possibilities. His speech will focus on UAV applications, laws of operation in North Carolina, and a display of an actual drone.
