Randolph Community College Announces 2013 Spring Semester Honor Roll

Randolph Community College announces the President’s List, Dean’s List, and Honor List for the 2013 spring semester.
          
To be eligible, a student must complete at least 12 credit hours for the session, excluding Developmental Studies hours and proficiency hours with no incompletes, and earn a grade point average of 4.0 for the President’s List, 3.50-3.99 for the Dean’s List, or 3.00-3.49 for the Honor List. Also, students who complete at least six but less than 12 credit hours for the session and earn a grade point average of 3.00-4.00, excluding Developmental Studies hours and proficiency hours with no incompletes, are eligible for the Honor List.

Randolph Community College Foundation Announces 2013 Presidential Scholars

Five elite Randolph County high school students have been chosen in a compe-titive process to become Presidential Scholars at Randolph Community College for the 2013-2014 school year. Ashley Marie Bodenheimer of Wheatmore High School, Katleen “Katie” Denise Donahue of Eastern Randolph High School, Autumn Hope Earnhardt of Trinity High School, Isaac Christian Ferguson of Providence Grove High School, and Amber Dawn Martin of Southwestern Randolph High School will receive two-year RCC scholarships through the Presidential Scholars program funded by the Randolph Community College Foundation.

Real Estate Provisional Broker Course Set To Begin June 17 at Randolph Community College's Archdale Center

Randolph Community College will offer a Real Estate Provisional Broker course beginning Monday, June 17, at the Archdale Center. This is the first time in several years that this course has been offered at RCC.

The course is required to satisfy the educational requirements for a provisional broker and is designed to prepare the student to pass the real estate license examination administered by the N.C. Real Estate Commission. Topics include basic real estate principles and practices, law and contracts, financing, closing valuation, fair housing and real estate laws. Salem College, University Center of Randolph County Information Sessions Set for June 6

Two information sessions about the Business Administration bachelor’s degree program through Salem College/University Center of Randolph County are scheduled in June on Randolph Community College’s Asheboro Campus. Prospective students will be able to meet with Salem College officials and learn more about this program that allows students to earn a four-year Business Administration degree without leaving Randolph County. The program is moving into its fifth year.
           
The information sessions are scheduled for 12-1 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium. If prospective students decide to complete an application during either one of the information sessions, Salem College will automatically waive the $30 application fee and will also pay for and request all official sealed college or university transcripts.

Randolph Community College Offers Free Math Prep Courses in Asheboro and Archdale

Need a math refresher before entering college? Randolph Community College’s College and Career Readiness program will be holding math classes this summer to help students gain foundational skills. The aim is to prepare students for developmental or curriculum courses, said Ashley Moody, director of adult basic education/adult high school programs.

Topics to be covered in the Math Prep course include fractions, decimals, percentages, and pre-algebra.

These classes are free of charge and offered in two six-week sessions. The first one will be May 20-June 26, and the second session will be July 1-Aug. 7.

Students can choose from two different class times on the Asheboro Campus—9 a.m.-12 noon or 5:30-8:30 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Classes will also be held at the Archdale Center from 9 a.m.-12 noon only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Seven Randolph Community College Global Logistics Students Receive Career Readiness Certificates

Seven Global Logistics students received their certificate of career readiness from the North Carolina Center for Global Logistics (www.nccgl.com ) on May 2 at Randolph Community College’s Archdale Center. The students completed four core classes in their logistics curriculum and were therefore eligible to receive the certificate.
           
In attendance were Dr. Robert S. Shackleford, president, Anne Hockett, vice president for instructional services, Lisa Bock, director of the Archdale Center, and Sara Butcher, Global Logistics instructor from RCC; Charles Edwards, executive director, and Kathleen Patterson, associate director, both from NCCGL; Steve Ridgill, plant manager of Dart Container in Randleman; and Angela Hazelwood, traffic manager for Hafele in Archdale. Both Ridgill and Hazelwood are members of the RCC Global Logistics advisory committee.
           
Students receiving certificates were George T. Hazelwood, Trinity; Thomas A. Mabry, Troy; Paula D. Motley, Lexington; Theodore S. Patterson, Greensboro; Dan W. Tanner, II, Asheboro; Gwen Dale Taylor, Archdale; and Taneesha L. Thompson, Sanford.

Robert Shackleford Honored as NCCCS President of the Year

Randolph Community College President Robert S. Shackleford Jr. was recognized as the Wells Fargo President of the Year by the North Carolina Community College System during RCC’s curriculum graduation ceremony on May 8. The honor was originally announced in January.
           
Dr. Shackleford is a 1969 graduate of Roxboro High School. His sisters, Starr Loftis and Dawn Blalock, still live in Roxboro.
           
K. Ray Bailey, a member of the State Board of Community Colleges, was the keynote speaker at Wednesday’s graduation and presented the President of the Year plaque to Shackleford. Bailey talked to the graduates about becoming leaders in their communities, then noted they had a current outstanding leader in Shackleford. Bailey, who has known Shackleford for many years, said he would describe him as “a man who loves his creator, a man who loves his family, a man who loves his college, and a man who loves his community.”

Randlph Community College Graduates Over 460 in Spring 2013

State Board of Community Colleges member K. Ray Bailey was the guest speaker at Randolph Community College’s Curriculum Graduation ceremony on Wednesday, May 8, in the Asheboro High School gymnasium.
           
Over 460 students applied to graduate with their associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates this spring. Approximately 200 graduates participated in the ceremony on May 8.
           
In addition to giving the graduation address, Mr. Bailey presented a special recognition to Dr. Robert S. Shackleford Jr., as the North Carolina 2013 Wells Fargo President of the Year award winner.

Rebecca Pulido Named Academic Excellence Award Winner at Randolph Community College

Rebeccca Ann Pulido, who will be graduating this week from Randolph Community College with a double major in Radiography and General Education, has been named the College’s Academic Excellence Award winner for 2013.
           
Fifty-eight students, one from each college in the North Carolina Community College System, received Academic Excellence Awards. AEA selection requirements are consistent with Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Criteria. Each student received a plaque and medallion in honor of their accomplishments.
           
The annual awards coincide with the 50th anniversary celebration of the North Carolina Community College System. “Student success is our highest priority,” says Dr. Scott Ralls, NCCCS president. “The students we are honoring with these awards are changing their lives, working toward their goals and finding their own individual success. This is what our community colleges were founded on, and 50 years later, we are proud to recognize these students as carrying on that tradition.”

Randolph Community College Plans Double Workshop for Disabled Adults and Caregivers on June 8

Randolph Community College’s Compensatory Education program will be holding two Life-Care Planning workshops on Saturday, June 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Continuing Education and Industrial Center on the Asheboro Campus. One of the workshops will be for parents and guardians, while a second workshop for disabled adults will take place simultaneously.
           
“Who Will Care for My Disabled Adult Child When I’m No Longer Able To?”is the topic of the first workshop designed for parents and guardians. Breakout sessions will feature an attorney who specializes in wills and estates, representatives from the Social Security Administration, Department of Social Services, Randolph Hospital, Therapeutic Alternatives, as well as vendors from agencies serving the disabled.
           
The second workshop, which will run concurrently, is “Basic Daily Living, Social, Life & Self-Advocacy Skills for Disabled Adults.”This workshop is designed for independent disabled adults and will feature sessions on basic cooking, budgets, nutrition, health care, and much more. This workshop has limited availability.

Randolph Community College Small Business Center Seminars on May 22 Tackle Social Networking, Web Presence

Randolph Community College’s Small Business Center is offering two seminars this month designed to help small businesses with one of the hottest marketing topics today—social networking and creating an online presence.
          
A two-hour seminar titled “Low Cost, No Cost Methods to Create an Effective Web Presence” will be held from 11:30-1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, at J&S Café in Archdale. The cost of this seminar is $15, which includes lunch. A more in-depth, three-hour seminar, “Build Your Business With Social Networking,” will be held from 6-9 p.m., May 22 at RCC’s Archdale Center. The evening seminar is being presented free of charge through funding from the Small Business Center Network.

Randolph Community College May 8 Curriculum Graduation to be Held in AHS Gym

State Board of Community Colleges member K. Ray Bailey will be the guest speaker at Randolph Community College’s Curriculum Graduation ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, in the Asheboro High School gymnasium.
           
Over 460 students have applied to graduate with their associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates this spring. Approximately 200 graduates are expected to participate in the ceremony on May 8.
           
In addition to giving the graduation address, Mr. Bailey will present a special recognition to Dr. Robert S. Shackleford Jr., as the 2013 Wells Fargo President of the Year award winner.
           
It was necessary to hold the graduation inside this year because of renovations that are under way on the Lee J. Stone football stadium. Because of the limited space in the gymnasium, RCC has issued five guest tickets for each graduate who is participating in the ceremony. Only ticketed guests will be allowed in the gymnasium. Overflow seating will be available in the Asheboro High School Performing Arts Center with a live video feed for additional guests to watch the ceremony.
