Addiction to prescribed painkillers will be the topic of an upcoming symposium at Randolph Community College in May.
The “2017 Substance Abuse & Mental Health Symposium: The Prescribed Addiction” is scheduled for 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Friday, May 19 in the JB and Claire Davis Corporate Training Center in the Continuing Education and Industrial Center at 413 Industrial Park Avenue. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered.
Two keynote speakers, Dr. Emily Mullen and Dr. Shawn Dalton-Bethea, will discuss the growing issue, as well as alternatives to pain meds for managing chronic pain.

RCC/Progressive Design Collaborative Win Award for Continuing Education and Industrial Center
Randolph Community College’s Continuing Education and Industrial Center
was honored with The Innovator Award, part of the Piedmont Triad 2017
Sustainable Leadership Awards, at a ceremony held by the U.S. Green
Building Council North Carolina on March 16 at Milton Rhodes Center for
the Arts in Winston-Salem.
The Innovator Award seeks to recognize an innovative solution to a green building problem, including existing, new or renovated buildings, systems or operations.
RCC shares this award with Scott Ennis, PE, a mechanical engineer with Progressive Design Collaborative of Raleigh, which submitted the nomination. Progressive Design was the engineering firm for the CEIC project.

Web Grubb Named Randolph Community College Small Business Center Director
Web Grubb of Archdale has joined Randolph Community College as director
of the Small Business Center. In this position, he is responsible for
organizing, implementing, and administering the Small Business Center
program, which provides free seminars, small business counseling, and
links to resources for local entrepreneurs. The Small Business Center is

Randolph Community College Plans Mental Health First Aid Course for April, June
Randolph Community College’s Workforce Development and Continuing
Education Division will offer a groundbreaking public education program,
“Mental Health First Aid,” that is designed for all members of the community.

Eight Students Complete 2016-2017 Fountain-Luria Student Leadership Academy at RCC
Eight students graduated from the 2016-2017 Fountain-Luria Student Leadership Academy at Randolph Community College on March 21.
Dr. Stephen Gainey, superintendent of the Randolph County School System, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Gainey talked to the graduates about four important points to remember as a leader: 1) that it is important to learn your role in your organization; 2) that you are a culture and climate builder at all times as a leader; 3) that good communication is essential; and 4) that you need to be the number one cheerleader for your organization. In conclusion, he said that “being a leader is not about winning and losing; it is not about being right; it’s about getting people to work together.”

Beta Theta Rho also received five other awards as a chapter: Distinguished Chapter Officer Team; Outstanding Participation in Carolinas Region Service Program “Purse Project”; Outstanding Participation in Carolinas Region Honors in Action Program; Distinguished College Project; and Honorable Mention for Distinguished Chapter.
The 2016 Beta Theta Rho officer team consisted of Jahmina Ollison, president; Taylor Maness, vice president; Zeno Phu, treasurer; Nicholas LaPlant, public relations; and Lilith Ward, secretary.
One member of Beta Theta Rho, Kayla Spinks, was also honored with two awards. Spinks, a Randolph Early College High School student, received the Distinguished Chapter Member award and was also inducted into the Carolinas Region Hall of Honor.

Automotive Standards Workshop Set for April 18 & 20 at Randolph Community College
Randolph Community College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education will offer a two-day “IATF 16949 Standard Workshop” in April for organizations in the automotive industry who need to transition to this new standard.
IATF 16949:2016 is the new Quality Management System (QMS) standard for organizations in the automotive industry. This new standard will supersede and replace the current ISO/TS 16949:2009 standard. All organizations currently certified to ISO/TS 16949:2009 will need to successfully transition by Sept. 14, 2018.
The workshop will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, April 18 and 20, in Room 223 of the Continuing Education and Industrial Center on the Asheboro Campus. The cost of the workshop is $150.

Annual Randolph Community College Veterans Benefits Fair Set for April 18
Randolph Community College will host its annual Veterans Benefits Fair
from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18 in the Foundation Conference
Center on the Asheboro Campus. Veterans will be able to find information
on health care, VA loans, education benefits, counseling, disability,
service dogs, employment, and more at the event, which is open to RCC

Human Resources Certification Exam Prep Set for March 28 at Randolph Community College

Have you ever wanted to capture the vibrant colors of a landscape in a painting? In this course, beginning and intermediate students will develop drawing and painting skills in the studio. Randolph County workers can expand their knowledge of Microsoft Excel
as a valuable business tool through two courses scheduled at Randolph

“MS Excel - Basic” is designed to teach students to create/edit simple worksheets, work with menus and toolbars, use basic formulas, format entries, merge cells, hide/unhide rows/ columns; and learn about date and time functions, text alignment, inserting and deleting columns/rows, freezing/unfreezing cells, splitting the window and page breaks. This course, which will include introductory and intermediate levels, will meet from 6-9 p.m. on Mondays, March 20 through May 15 in Room 104 of the Computer Technology Center on the Asheboro Campus. Try Out Upcoming No Excuses Boot Camp at Randolph Community College on March 14
Randolph Community College is offering a new type of exercise class this spring with a unique one-session demonstration class for those who have never tried one before.
The “No Excuses Boot Camp” training will consist of calisthenics, such as pushups, lunges and crunches, as well as drills and sprints.
