RCC Foundation Announces 2014 Presidential Scholars

Five outstanding Randolph County high school students have been chosen in a competitive process to become Presidential Scholars at Randolph Community College for the 2014-2015 school year. Emily Nichole Allred of Providence Grove High School, Morgan Blair Brackett of Southwestern Randolph High School, Taylor Addison Coble of Eastern Randolph High School, Christina “Crissy” Chanty Nutt of Faith Christian School, and DeAnna Nicole Shumaker of Eastern Randolph High School will receive two-year RCC scholarships through the Presidential Scholars program funded by the Randolph Community College Foundation.
           
High school students from public, private, and home schools throughout Randolph County were invited to apply for the scholarships. Thirteen students who met the preliminary requirements were invited to attend a Presidential Scholars Day at RCC, where they learned more about the College and were interviewed by a committee of faculty and staff members. Ten finalists were chosen and were invited back for a second interview with RCC President Robert Shackleford Jr., who made the final choice of five recipients.

Dr. NKrumah Lewis to Speak at Randolph Community College on May 7

Inner Strength, Randolph Community College’s Minority Male Mentoring Program (3MP), is bringing an exciting guest speaker to campus on Wednesday, May 7. Dr. NKrumah D. Lewis, an author, entrepreneur, social activist, and advocate for stigmatized populations, will speak and sign copies of his book, “Becoming a Butterfly: From Prison to Ph.D.” The event will be held in the Continuing Education and Industrial Center.
          
The first 20 people in line will receive a free copy of Dr. Lewis’ book. The book signing will be from 11:30 a.m.-12 noon. Dr. Lewis will speak from 12 noon-1 p.m.

Randolph Community College Adds New Division to Focus on Workforce Development

Randolph Community College will create a new division at the College with a “laser focus on workforce development” with the overall goal of “closing the skills gap” between job applicants and jobs available today, according to RCC President Robert S. Shackleford.
           
He made the announcement in a meeting of division personnel this week. The new division will be called Workforce Development and Continuing Education, and the College will be advertising to hire a vice president with strong industrial leadership experience to lead the changes.

October Date Set for “A Taste of Asheboro and Randolph County” Fundraiser

Community volunteers Jennifer Parrish and Julie Moore have announced the date for “A Taste of Asheboro and Randolph County,” a fundraiser they are hosting for the Randolph Community College Foundation to raise money for student scholarships. The event will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at 105 Worth in Asheboro.

Randolph Community College’s Beta Theta Rho Receives Five-Star Status for 11th Year

Beta Theta Rho, Randolph Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, received its Five-Star Chapter award for 11th year in a row at the 2014 Phi Theta Kappa Carolinas Regional Convention in Charleston, S.C., in March. The Five Star level is the highest level that a chapter can obtain, and it encourages excellence and recognizes progress in the attainment of goals set by the chapter.

Ivy Lindsey Honored for Academic Excellence at Randolph Community College Ceremony

Ivy Marie Lindsey of Seagrove was honored as RCC’s 2014 Academic Excellence Award winner on Thursday. Dr. Stuart Fountain, a member of the State Board of Community Colleges, was on hand to give Lindsey a plaque and medallion signifying her accomplishment. Dr. Fountain called on Lindsey’s husband and two children to come up on stage with her, recognizing that it was their support that helped her achieve her goal. She will graduate with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Networking Technology in May.

Randolph Community College to Host Employer Preview May 1

Randolph Community College’s Corporate and Continuing Education Division, is hosting an Employer Preview event to help connect RCC students with employers. The event will be held on Thursday, May 1, from 1-4 p.m. at the Corporate Training Center in the Continuing Education and Industrial Center at 413 Industrial Park Avenue.

According to Bryle Hatch, coordinator of workforce development for RCC, the event will connect RCC students with employers in the fields of machining, welding, HVAC, maintenance mechanics, electrical, and facilities maintenance. Registration is not required, but all students are encouraged to be professionally dressed and to have an updated resume ready.

Vote Online for Randolph Community College Foundation’s Dancing with the Randolph Stars

Voting for the Randolph Community College Foundation’s Dancing with the Randolph Stars 2014 is under way and will remain open until noon on Thursday, May 29. The public may vote for one or more of the 18 couples who will be performing at this year’s event at www.dancingwiththerandolphstars.org. Every $10 donation equals one vote. Proceeds benefit students at Randolph Community College.

Each couple will perform a short dance routine at the event scheduled for Saturday, May 31, at AVS Catering & Banquet Centre. The couple with the most votes at the end of the evening will be awarded the Dancing with the Randolph Stars trophy.
           
The initial tickets for the May 31 event have sold out, but the Foundation will maintain a waiting list in case tickets aren’t used. To place your name on the waiting list, complete a ticket request form at www.dancingwiththerandolphstars.org.
           
The 2013 fundraiser netted over $120,000 for student scholarships.

Arts Open House Set for April 24 at Randolph Community College

Randolph Community College is hosting an Arts Open House on Thursday, April 24, from 5-8 p.m. in the Pottery Center on the Asheboro Campus. The public is invited to view the pottery lab space, meet with instructors, and learn about some of the new and innovative pottery, metalworking and arts classes scheduled to begin in May and June.

Learn About Advanced Manufacturing at Randolph Community College Open House April 10

Randolph Community College will help celebrate North Carolina Manufacturing Awareness Week, April 7-11, 2014, by hosting an Advanced Manufacturing Open House on Thursday, April 10, from 6-8 p.m. in the Continuing Education and Industrial Center at 413 Industrial Park Avenue on the Asheboro Campus. In addition, RCC’s Welding Center at the Archdale Center, 110 Park Drive, will be open for demonstrations and tours. The public is invited.

Randolph Community College Inducts Largest Phi Theta Kappa Class

Beta Theta Rho, the local Five Star Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Randolph Community College, welcomed 100 new members to its ranks during its Spring Induction Ceremony on March 29, in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium on the Asheboro Campus. This is the largest number of students inducted in one semester since the chapter was chartered in November 1999, breaking the previous record of 70.

Randolph Community College Cultural Arts Series Hosts Salem College Dance Concert on April 24

Randolph Community College will conclude its 2013-2014 Cultural Arts Series with the Salem College Dance Concert of Student Choreography on Thursday, April 24, at 7 p.m. in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium on the Asheboro Campus.
           
Under the direction of Salem faculty members Shawn Bowman-Hicks and Heidi Echols, the Dance Company gives students an opportunity to explore the creative process in any dance genre. This concert will be a mix of modern dance, jazz, ballet and more.
