RCC SEELC Job Fair Set for April 8; Over 20 Employers Expected

Randolph Community College will host a Spring Job Fair on Wednesday, April 8, as part of its participation in the Southeastern Economic and Education Leadership Consortium (SEELC). RCC was awarded a $1.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor in September 2013 to become part of this multi-state consortium with a focus on advanced manufacturing jobs.

Over 20 employers are expected at the Job Fair, according to Miranda Lane, recruitment, retention, and completion coach for the SEELC. Employers will be seeking production operators, machinists, welders, and maintenance technicians. The event is open to the public and set for 12-6 p.m. in room 148 of the Continuing Education and Industrial Center at 413 Industrial Park Avenue.

Caregiver College Set for Saturday, April 25, at Randolph Community College; Nursing Care Deadline April 10

If you are caring for a sick loved one and need answers, you can find the help you need in an upcoming one-day intensive training event for home caregivers set for April 25 at Randolph Community College. This seminar will offer a variety of topics on issues of caregiving in the home and will be of special interest to family caregivers and volunteers, as well as allied health professionals. The event will also support those who care for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Once again this year, thanks to Randolph Hospital, free certified nursing care at your home is available for a limited number of caregivers. RCC's seventh annual Caregiver College, scheduled for 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at RCC's corporate training facility in the Continuing Education and Industrial Center on the Asheboro Campus, will feature keynote speaker Heather McKay, an occupational therapist and dementia care specialist.

Tour RCC Aquaponics Lab April 13-15 During N.C. Science Festival; N.C. Museum’s Lisa Gatens to Visit RCC April 16

Randolph Community College will host a Spring Science Festival featuring tours of its Aquaponics Lab April 13-15. In addition, you can learn about North Carolina’s unique mammals with special guest Lisa Gatens at RCC on Thursday, April 16. The tours and speaker are official events of the 2015 North Carolina Science Festival.

Do you know how to grow fresh vegetables without soil? Randolph Community College’s Aquaponics Lab is a working model of this food production system that raises fish and plants together. Discuss the sustainable ideas surrounding this innovative technique with RCC’s science faculty members. This year’s tours will also feature new raised plant beds outside. Information Session for University Center/Pfeiffer Elementary Education Program Set for April 14

Employment of elementary school teachers is projected to grow 12 percent nationwide from 2012 to 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In North Carolina, the projected growth in job openings is even higher—17% from 2012-2022. Potential elementary school teachers in Randolph County can train for these jobs without leaving the county borders through The University Center of Randolph County and Pfeiffer University.

Randolph Community College will be holding a drop-in information session for its Pfeiffer Elementary Education program on Tuesday, April 14, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the RCC Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus.

Students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree to teach K-6 in an elementary school can receive information and meet with both Pfeiffer and RCC representatives to ask questions and plan their coursework, according to Maria LeBaron, RCC Psychology instructor and Pfeiffer liaison.

The collaborative agreement between Pfeiffer and RCC began in spring of 2008. The general education courses are offered through RCC. The major courses are offered through Pfeiffer, and the bachelor's degree is granted by Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer also offers a Master of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts in Special Education through the University Center.

RCC classes are taught day, evening or online. Pfeiffer classes are usually held on Monday nights at the RCC Asheboro Campus and through videoconferencing or online. During the summer, classes may be held on multiple evenings and there are a few semesters when students would have day classes for school observations and student teaching.

RCC BLET/Criminal Justice/UNCP Info Session April 6

Randolph Community College will host an information session on Monday, April 6, to answer questions about the College's Basic Law Enforcement Training and Criminal Justice Technology programs, and RCC's transfer agreement with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke for Criminal Justice associate degree graduates.

This transfer agreement is applicable to students who complete the required hours for the Associate in Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice Technology from RCC and transfer to UNC-Pembroke to major in Criminal Justice. Transfers who have not completed the associate degree will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Regardless of hours transferred, students will be required to complete at least 18 hours in Criminal Justice from UNCP.

Interested students can drop in between the hours of 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus. Representatives from RCC's Criminal Justice and Basic Law Enforcement Training programs, as well as UNC Pembroke's Criminal Justice and Interdisciplinary Studies programs, will be on hand to answer questions.

Salem College Dance Concert on April 20, Pinocchio on April 23, Complete Randolph Community College Cultural Arts Season

Randolph Community College's Cultural Arts Series will conclude in April with two events. The Salem College Dance Concert of Student Choreography will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 20, at Sunset Theatre in downtown Asheboro, as a part of the 2015 Sunset Theatre Cultural Series.

The Salem College Dance Company will perform a concert of student choreography. Under the direction of faculty member Heidi Echols, the Dance Company gives students an opportunity to explore the creative process in any dance genre. This concert will be a mix of modern dance, jazz, ballet and more.

In addition, Randolph Community College will host UNCG's North Carolina Theatre for Young People with their children's play "Pinocchio," at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium on the Asheboro Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Randolph Community College Introduces New Computer Technology Integration Program for Fall

Randolph Community College will introduce a new Computer Technology Integration associate in applied science degree and certificate program this fall that will offer three specialization tracks: Support Specialist, Network Management Specialist, and Cyber Security Specialist.

The current Computer Information Technology and Networking Technology degrees are being phased out. The changes have been approved by RCC's Board of Trustees and the State Board of Community Colleges, and are pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

"The new program will offer students expanded opportunities in emerging fields within information technology," said Steve Baltes, department head for computer technology programs at RCC. The addition of the Cyber Security Specialist track represents an area not covered by RCC's computer courses in the past.
