Randolph Community College Earns AWS Test Facility Certification for Welding Technology

Randolph Community College’s Archdale Welding Center has been named an Accredited Testing Facility (ATF) by the American Welding Society. The AWS Accredited Test Facility program establishes minimum requirements for test facilities, their personnel and equipment to qualify for accreditation to test and qualify welders. RCC’s testing program can test welders from anyone of eight different codes and standards.

The designation means that RCC’s Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) can test welders for the American Welding Society certifications that are recognized anywhere in the world, said Michael Ford, department head and CWI for Welding Technology at RCC. Ford said it took over a year of work to gain the certification, which included implementing a quality assurance program and writing a Quality Manual that controls the activities related to the testing of welders.

Brooke Schmidly Appointed to Randolph Community College Board of Trustees

Brooke Schmidly of Asheboro was appointed as a new member of the Randolph Community College Board of Trustees by the North Carolina Governor’s Office. Schmidly signed her oath of office at the Sept. 20 meeting of the Board held in the Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus. She was appointed to a four-year term ending June 30, 2022.

Schmidly is a partner in the Asheboro law firm of Moser, Schmidly, Roose, and Bennett. She has been with the firm since 2007 specializing in family law cases.

Randolph Community College to Offer Forklift Operator Training October 20

Randolph Community College will offer a Saturday course on forklift operation in October. “Forklift Operator Training” will be held from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, in Room 223 at the Continuing Education and Industrial Center on RCC’s Asheboro Campus.

This course provides instruction on the operation and maintenance of a Powered Industrial Truck (forklift). It is OSHA compliant and taught by a State of North Carolina certified instructor. It is a comprehensive, hands-on program that covers all aspects of lift truck training. A certificate of completion will be provided to all students who successfully complete the course. Students should wear sturdy closed toe and heel shoes (no crocs or flip-flops) and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions as the hands-on portion will be outside.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older to enroll in this class. The cost of the course is $70.55.

Human Resources Certification Exam Prep Class Begins Oct. 2 at Randolph Community College

Randolph Community College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division has scheduled another “PHR/SPHR Certification Exam Prep” course to help human resources professionals advance their careers.

The class (#67400) will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 2 – Dec. 18, in Room 107 of the Continuing Education and Industrial Center on the Asheboro Campus. “Acrylic Pour Painting” Class to Begin at Randolph Community College Oct. 1

Randolph Community College will offer a class in “Acrylic Pour Painting” beginning Oct. 1 taught by instructor Victoria Pierce. Acrylic pour painting is the art of mixing two or more paint colors in the same container, pouring them onto a canvas or other medium in a desired pattern, then using gravity to move the paint around creating interesting and sometimes surprising colors and results.

The class will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Mondays, Oct. 1 through Oct. 29, in Room 102 of the Building Trades Center on the Asheboro Campus. The cost is $55.55. Students will be provided with a supply list upon registration.

New Hybrid Vet Assistant I Course Begins Sept. 25 at Randolph Community College

Randolph Community College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division is introducing a new “Vet Assistant I” course this month designed for those interested in careers in the veterinary or applied science fields.

This 120-hour hybrid course will introduce students to the principles and physiology of animal management, issues facing the animal science industry, contributions of the animal science industry to humanity, and the importance of the animal science industry to North Carolina.

RCC Marks 50th Anniversary of Program with first Photographic Technology Homecoming

Randolph Community College’s Photographic Technology program marked its 50th anniversary on Sept. 7-8 with its first Homecoming Celebration. About 170 alumni attended the event that included tours of the newly renovated photo facility on the Asheboro Campus, photography seminars, and a lecture by Nikon Ambassador Tamara Lackey.

“The open house on Friday night was awesome,” said Lorie L. McCroskey, RCC’s director of development and an RCC photo alumna. “For most graduates, this was the first time they were seeing the renovated studio space. We had students from almost every class — even the very first year — attend.”

Learn to Save Money with Couponing at Randolph Community College Randleman Center

Randolph Community College is offering both of its popular couponing workshops at the Randleman Center this fall. Most participants easily save the cost of the workshop and more during their first grocery shopping trip using these techniques.

In the “Extreme Couponing I” workshop, students will learn to save an average of 50%-75% by using coupons and drastically cutting their food budgets by bargain shopping. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission Grant to Fund Occupational Training at RCC

Randolph Community College has received a $15,000 grant from the Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, according to Wanda Beck, director of workforce development. The grant will fund Project Skill-Up scholarships for a workforce development initiative with two core components: 1) providing access to short-term training programs aligned with in-demand credentials supporting local workforce need; 2) developing educational opportunities for individuals interested in diversifying utilization of agriculture resources and enterprises.

Randolph Community College "Introduction to QuickBooks" Course Set to Begin Sept. 11

Randolph Community College Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division will offer a “QuickBooks, Introduction” course beginning Tuesday, Sept. 11.

In this course (#66786), students will learn how to do accounting for their businesses using this popular accounting software. Topics will include using special journals and subsidiary ledgers and generating professional financial statements.

Bowers to Teach “Plein Air” Painting Course Beginning Sept. 11 at Lake Lucas

Fall is a wonderful time to be outdoors and the perfect season for students to be introduced to oil and acrylic painting outdoors. Randolph Community College is offering a “Painting the Landscape in Oils and Acrylics – Plein Air” course beginning on Sept. 11, taught by professional artist and local historian Henry Bowers.

Plein Air is a French term meaning outside, or in this case, painting outside. Beginning and intermediate students will get the opportunity to try out painting methods while learning design, drawing, and color theory. Classes will be held at Lake Lucas, 3158 Old Lexington Road in Asheboro. Students will need to furnish their own supplies.

Fall Auto Dealer Licensing Classes Set to Begin Sept. 7 at Randolph Community College

Prospective auto dealers can take the DMV: Dealer Pre-License course at Randolph Community College, which provides the 12 hours of authorized prelicensing training required in North Carolina. Topics include dealer license plates, vehicle inspections, titling and registration, frequently used forms, and dealer disclosures. The course (#67080) will be offered next from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8. Registration for this course is $70. An additional section (#67081) is scheduled for Nov. 6-7.

RCC’s Motor Vehicle Dealer Education course is designed to meet the continuing education training requirements for Used Vehicle Dealer’s license renewal in North Carolina. The next class (#67082) is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 10, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Registration is $70. An additional section (#67083) is scheduled for Nov. 8.

Guitar Courses Scheduled at Randolph Community College Beginning in September

Walter Matthew Hoover, a professional musician and teacher for the past 30 years, will teach a “Beginning Guitar” and a “Guitar 2” course at Randolph Community College, both beginning in September.

In “Beginning Guitar” (#67088), students will learn the basics of guitar technique that make a strong musical foundation. Topics covered include use of a pick or plectrum, note reading, fretting notes, and playing open position chords. Easy examples of famous songs will be used throughout to make learning fun and inspiring. The course will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Mondays, Sept. 10 through Nov. 12.

Randolph Community College Trustees Honor Randolph Health with Distinguished Service Award

Randolph Health was honored by the Randolph Community College Board of Trustees on Aug. 23 with the 2018 Distinguished Service Award. The presentation was made at a reception in the JB & Claire Davis Corporate Training Center on the Asheboro Campus.

RCC Board of Trustees Chair Mac Sherrill said, “Randolph Health staff have served Randolph Community College in a variety of ways,” detailing a long list of collaborations including the RCC Foundation Board; health program advisory committees; participation in RCC Foundation events; participation in RCC’s bi-annual President’s Community Advisory Council; helping to develop the healthcare pathway in partnership with Asheboro City Schools and Randolph County School System as part of the Pathways to Prosperity program; providing clinical sites for RCC students; transitioning its relationship with Winston-Salem State University to the College so that it could be a part of RCC’s University Center; hiring many RCC graduates; helping to fill RCC instructor vacancies; expanding opportunities for certified nursing assistants; and “being heavily involved in the planning for the new Allied Health Center so that future students receive the training and preparation needed in today’s healthcare environment.”

Randolph Community College Breaks Ground on Allied Health Center

Randolph Community College held a groundbreaking ceremony for its much-anticipated Allied Health Center on Thursday, with over 100 state and local government officials, business and industry partners, and RCC faculty, staff and students gathered at the site on Industrial Park Avenue. The $14.4 million facility will house the College’s Associate Degree Nursing, Radiography, Medical Assisting, and Emergency Medical Services programs.

The 45,000-square-foot, two-story, L-shaped building will increase the space available for the health care programs by 86%. Funds for the new building will come from Randolph County’s ¼-cent sales tax designated for RCC capital construction ($9.4 million) and state community college bond funds ($5 million).

Fall Teacher Training Classes at Randolph Community College to Begin in September

Randolph County teachers have the opportunity to enroll in two teacher renewal classes through Randolph Community College this fall for teacher renewal credit. Teachers should decide which courses to take and apply to their school district for prior approval.

“Classroom Management/Positive Classroom Culture” (section #65306) will meet from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 6 through Sept. 20. This course is designed to assist teachers in becoming more effective classroom managers. It includes sessions on best practices for establishing a safe and orderly school environment that supports academic achievement, the importance of giving effective directions within the context of classroom management, the importance of narrating student behavior, and the importance of corrective action as outlined in a discipline hierarchy. Suggestions and strategies are also given for moving students toward a self-managed classroom and for building trusting relationships with students and parents. The cost is $70.

“Effective Teacher Training,” a basic preparation and information course for beginning teachers and substitute teachers, will be offered from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 25 – Oct. 18, for substitute teachers (section #65308; cost $70), and from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 25 – Oct. 25, for lateral entry teachers (section #65309; cost $125).

RCC Randleman Center Offers ServSafe Class for Restaurant Workers Sept. 10-12

Randolph Community College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division will offer restaurant workers a chance to earn their ServSafe certificate with a class at the Randleman Center Aug. 27-30.

The three-session class (section #67311) will meet from 4:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 27 and Aug. 28, and from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30.

The ServSafe program was developed by the National Restaurant Association with the help of foodservice industry experts. Years of experience and inside knowledge of the foodservice industry are at the core of the course, exams and materials.

Auto Body Repair Course Beginning Sept. 4 at Randolph Community College

Randolph Community College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division is offering an “Auto Body Repair Basics” class beginning in September, which is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the auto body repair field.

Students will be taught how to identify and describe the current types of body/frame construction; evaluate vehicle damage through proper application of measuring and gauging equipment and sequencing techniques; and return vehicle to pre-accident condition. Upon completion, students will have the knowledge base to perform hands-on repairs in the areas of nonstructural repairs, MIG welding, plastics and adhesives, refinishing, and other related areas.

This course will meet from 5:30-9:30 p.m., Mondays and Tuesdays, Sept. 4 through Dec. 17, in the Richard Petty Education Center on the Asheboro Campus. The cost is $180.55

RCC Student Leadership Academy Application Deadline Sept. 14

Applications are being accepted for Randolph Community College’s 12th annual Fountain-Luria Student Leadership Academy. The Academy is named after local leaders Dr. Stuart Fountain and Dr. Alan Luria, who have supported the Student Leadership Academy since its inception in 2008.

Applicants are required to have completed 24 credit hours with RCC as either a Randolph Early College High School student or a regular RCC student, according to Kelly Heath, chair of the SLA Standing Committee. The students must also have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher to be eligible.

Apprenticeship Randolph Signs 18 Students in Second Year

Apprenticeship Randolph welcomed 17 high school students as new apprentices for 2018 and signed an 18th student who joined the program mid-year last year during its 2018 Signing Ceremony held Aug. 9 in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium at Randolph Community College.

Apprenticeship Randolph is an opportunity for students to get a jump start on a professional career in Randolph County’s booming local industries. Students have the opportunity to maximize earning potential, gain valuable skills and experience through on-the-job training, and earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in Manufacturing Technology from Randolph Community College at no cost to the student.
