Energy conservation continues to be a critical goal for the United States and its citizens and one step toward that goal is making individual homes energy efficient. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the energy conservation resulting from these efforts helps our country reduce its dependence on foreign oil and decrease the cost of energy for families while improving the health and safety of homes.
Randolph Community College’s Corporate and Continuing Education Division has added a Weatherization: Introduction course to its spring semester schedule. The course will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, March 5 – April 23, from 6-9:30 p.m. on the Asheboro Campus. The cost is $120.
This course examines the critical performance factors of buildings that impact health, safety, comfort, energy efficiency and durability. Topics include an overview of the technology; examples of typical installations and their defects; procedures for performing audits; and guidelines for analyzing potential retrofits. Upon completion, students will have introductory knowledge for becoming a home energy rater and will be better prepared for the Comprehensive Weatherization class, which includes field applications. This course will briefly review the education and skills requirement to sit for national certification exams such as Energy Star, Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Certification Model, and the RESNET Home Energy Rating Standards.
