Randolph Community College Inner Strength Member Earns Spot in Pitt’s iSchool Summer Institute

Malachi Jones, a second-year Randolph Community College Business Administration student and a participant in RCC's Inner Strength 3MP (minority male mentoring program), has been selected to participate in the University of Pittsburgh's iSchool Inclusion Institute (i3) this summer. Jones is one of only 20 students admitted each year to this nationally recognized, competitive program.

Randolph Community College's Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Earns Awards at Convention

Three members of Randolph Community College's Beta Theta Rho chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently attended the 2011 Carolinas Regional Convention in Clemmons, N.C., and brought home numerous plaques and awards earned by the local chapter for its 2010 activities.

Eight Asheboro Police Officers Complete Crisis Intervention Team Training at Randolph Community College


Eight Asheboro City police officers who trained as part of a Crisis Intervention Team community collaborative effort graduated March 25 at Randolph Community College. North Carolina Representative Pat Hurley gave the commencement address. Senator Jerry Tillman was also in attendance, along with law enforcement personnel from the Asheboro City Police Department and the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, family, and friends.

Randolph Community College University Center Night Set for April 5

Randolph Community College will host its 5th University Center Night at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium on the Asheboro Campus. Representatives from Salem College and Pfeiffer University will be on hand to answer any questions that interested students have about the programs.

The University Center of Randolph County now offers bachelor's degrees in Business Administration, Elementary Education, and Criminal Justice, and recently added a master's degree program in Elementary Education.

Randolph Community College Compensatory Education Sets Open House March 24 & 25

Randolph Community College's Compensatory Education program will hold an Open House on Thursday and Friday, March 24 and 25. The event will be held from 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m., in the J.W. "Willie" Plummer Vocational/Technical Center, Room 104, on the Asheboro Campus. Students and guardians will be able to meet the instructors, see the classrooms, and tour the RCC campus.

Randolph Community College Cosmetology Center Closed March 23-26

Randolph Community College's Cosmetology Center will be closed March 23-26 for spring break. It will reopen on Wednesday, March 30.

The Center's regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 8:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Randolph Community College Takes Fire Tour to High Schools


Randolph Community College and various Randolph County fire departments will conduct a "Fire Tour" of Randolph County high schools in the next few weeks to promote fire and rescue careers, according to Brian Causey, RCC's coordinator/instructor of Fire Services and director of the Emergency Services Training Center.

Randolph Community College's Shane Bryson Graduates From NCCCS Student Leadership Institute

Randolph Community College student Shane Bryson of Thomasville graduated from the North Carolina Community College System Student Leadership Institute on March 11 in Raleigh.

The Student Leadership Institute, which is cosponsored by the NCCCS and the N.C. Association of Community College Presidents, is a yearlong leadership development program. Students are offered a variety of hands-on educational learning opportunities. They attend a weeklong summer session at Peace College and fall and spring weekend sessions. Students are nominated by administrators and advisors on their campuses and selected by the SLI Board of Directors for the Institute. The goal of the program is to train better leaders, who then go back to their home campuses to teach others.

Randolph Community College Student Leadership Group To Camp Outside Overnight March 18 to Raise Awareness of Homeless, Hungry

A Student Leadership Academy team at Randolph Community College is planning a "Care to Share?" event on Friday, March 18 to raise awareness of the homeless and hungry in Randolph County and collect food, clothing, and sleeping bags to donate to various community charities.

One of the requirements of RCC's Student Leadership Academy is for each student team to identify a need in the community and devise a way to meet that need. The team, consisting of Shane Bryson of Thomasville, Shirley Landry of Trinity, Brooke Baxter of Denton, and Emily Smith of Asheboro, has elicited help for their project from the RCC Student Government Association and other student groups. They plan to simulate homelessness by "camping" outside the Foundation Conference Center from 8 a.m., Friday, March 18, until 8 a.m., Saturday, March 19.

Donations will be accepted all this week, with collection boxes set up on both the Asheboro Campus and at the Archdale Center. Clothing will be donated to the Salvation Army, canned food to Christians United Outreach Center, and sleeping bags to Central Carolina Community Church (C4) of Asheboro. Area residents and students can also drop off donations the day of the event at the Foundation Conference Center.

Liberty Businesses Invited to Information Session March 30

Randolph Community College's Small Business Center, in conjunction with the Randolph County Economic Development Corporation, will sponsor a "Putting Your Business on the Map…Without Eating Your Profits" information session for Liberty area businesses on Wednesday, March 30, from 6-8 p.m. at the Roy Reitzel Senior Citizens Center at 128 S. Fayetteville Street. Light refreshments will be served.

The purpose of the session is to "map" Liberty businesses to see what type of education and services are needed to help businesses in the area rise to the next level of success. Depending on the results of the meeting, a series of free Small Business Center courses will be scheduled to aid the businesses.

Caregiver College Set for Saturday, March 26 at Randolph Community College

If you are caring for a sick or dying loved one and feel overwhelmed, you may benefit from attending a one-day intensive training event for home caregivers set for March 26. The event is being sponsored by Randolph Community College, Hospice of Randolph County, Randolph Hospital, Community Home Care & Hospice, Cross Road Retirement Community, Universal Healthcare, Randolph County Senior Adults Association, Randolph County Public Library, and Warren Coble Social Security & Senior Services Advisor.

The Caregiver College, set for 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, at RCC's Asheboro Campus, will offer sessions on a variety of topics. "Why Do They Do That?" is the topic of the keynote session by Teepa Snow, an occupational therapist specializing in dementia care and dementia education.

Snow has over 30 years of experience in geriatrics and provides educational and training sessions to organizations and providers throughout the United States. She has a strong and varied clinical background and has worked collaboratively to conduct clinical research in a variety of settings and on a variety of geriatric topics. Snow, who has an M.S. in Occupational Therapy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association and has received local, statewide, and national recognition for her expertise in geriatrics, dementia care and programming, and staff training.

Topics for other sessions include veterans benefits, arthritis, safety transfer for home care, diabetes, and a panel discussion on guilt/ethical dilemmas.

The registration fee for the Caregiver College is $25; lunch is included for those who preregister.

Free certified nursing care at your home is available to allow caregivers to attend. Availability is limited, so call 633-7706 by March 11 to reserve free home care.
