Basic Sewing Class Begins Feb. 21 at Randolph Community College Archdale Center

Have you ever wondered if you would like to sew? Randolph Community College is offering a Basic Sewing class at its Archdale Center, taught by local seamstress Johnnie Springett. In RCC’s six-week class, students will learn how to choose fabric, read and cut patterns, thread bobbins, and master the general operations of a sewing machine. Plus, participants will make for themselves—from start to finish—a fashionable hobo-style pocketbook.

“Our new sewing class is a timely offering,” notes Archdale Center Director Lisa Bock, who states that “sewing has seen a resurgence in popularity in the last two to three years, due to the economy and because people enjoy different types of do-it-yourself projects, including making one’s own clothes or embellishing items they’ve bought.” Bock is hopeful that students will enjoy this class so much so that they will return for a follow-up class with Springett, which will focus on making the ever-popular pillow sundress or knot dress.

The Basic Sewing class begins on Feb. 21. It will run on Tuesdays, from 6-9 p.m., through March 27. Enrollment is limited to approximately 8 students. Any student who already owns a sewing machine is encouraged to bring it to class.

Randolph Community College Archdale Center Launching “In the Margins” Book Club Feb. 21

This spring, Randolph Community College’s Archdale Center will be the site of a different kind of course that will appeal to those who appreciate the Southern tradition of storytelling. The “In the Margins” RCC Book Club will meet on Tuesdays, from 6-7:30 p.m., beginning Feb. 21 at the Archdale Center.

This new course is for anyone who loves to read and enjoys discussing what you’ve read with friends and fellow readers. The group’s discussion will go beyond the action of the story, digging down a little deeper into the author’s writing style and word choices. It will explore story lines, character development and story settings.

The Book Club sessions will be held Feb. 21, Feb. 28, March 20, March 27, April 17, and April 24. The cost is $30, which includes the price of the books. The Archdale Center is located at 110 Park Drive in Creekside Park, just off Highway 311 south of Archdale.

17 Couples Chosen for 2012 Dancing with the Randolph Stars

The dancer pairings for the Randolph Community College Foundation’s 2012 Dancing with the Randolph Stars benefit were announced at a “Meet the Stars” event held at The Exchange Banquet and Meeting Hall on January 29. Seventeen couples have been chosen for this year’s show, most newcomers to the event. Just seven dancers have experience from previous years—LoriAnn Owen, who danced in the 2010 inaugural event; Tyler Wilhoit and Aaryn Slafky, the only couple returning from last year; Greg Spainhour and Diane Winnemuller, who both danced last year with other partners; and Rick Crawford and Derrick Sides, who were “zombies” in a Michael Jackson “Thriller” number performed by David Smith and Betsy Browne last year.

Randolph Community College Schedules Self-Defense Courses Beginning Feb. 4

Randolph Community College’s Corporate and Continuing Education Division has scheduled two Self-Defense courses beginning Saturday, Feb. 4.

Martial Arts Self-Defense for Women will teach women how to defend themselves when facing danger. The intent of this course is to give students self-confidence in compromising situations. The course will meet from 1:30-2:45 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 4 – 25.

Martial Arts Self-Defense (General) is an introductory course aimed at teaching the basics of self-defense with the goal of offering an assurance that everyone can control their circumstances. It will meet from 3-4:15 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 4 - 25.

Randolph Community College is offering a Life Enrichment Series of seminars this spring on practical topics designed to meet significant needs in Randolph County. The series of half-day seminars is one of President Robert Shackleford’s Presidential Initiatives for the 2011-2012 school year.

“Grieving and You: A Forum for Understanding” is the title of the first seminar set for Saturday, Feb. 18 from 8-11 a.m. in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium on the Asheboro Campus. The goal of the seminar is to provide opportunities to understand and cope with grief on an individual basis and provide grievers with potential contacts to interface with for support and understanding.

Digital Photography Course Set to Begin Feb. 6 at Randolph Community College Archdale Center

Randolph Community College’s Archdale Center will offer a Digital Camera Photography course beginning in February.

The Corporate and Continuing Education Division course will allow students to explore digital photography and give them a crash course on using a digital camera. This course includes taking photos; storing images; sharing photos; scanning photos; and using the zoom, flash, and shutter buttons. The course will be filled with tips and tricks to help students take better pictures. Students should bring their own digital camera to class.

The class will meet from 1-4 p.m., Mondays, Feb. 6 – March 19. Cost is $46.

Randolph Community College Archdale Offers SAT Prep Course Beginning Feb. 7

Just in time for the March 10, 2012, SAT test date, Randolph Community College’s Archdale Center is offering an SAT Prep Course beginning Tuesday, Feb. 7.

This 20-hour course is recommended for students taking the SAT this academic year and who are currently taking or have taken geometry. In this course, students will review basic math through Algebra II to prepare for the problem reasoning on the SAT test. Verbal preparation includes improving vocabulary, essay writing, and reading comprehension. Test-taking tips will be included in each session.

The course will meet from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 7 – March 8 at the Archdale Center. The cost is $80, and enrollment is limited to 18 students. Students must bring a calculator to each class session.

Six Begin Third President’s Leadership Academy at Randolph Community College

Salem College/University Center Info Sessions Set for Jan. 26 at Randolph Community College

Screening/Discussion of “Groundhog Day” Planned for Feb. 2 at Randolph Community College

The next event in Randolph Community College’s 2011-2012 Cultural Arts Series is the Groundhog Day Movie Night scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 2, in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center on the Asheboro Campus. The event, which begins at 7 p.m., is free and open to the public.

This project receives support from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Join RCC’s Chad Conville, a graduate of the film studies program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, for a screening, analysis, and open discussion of the one-of-a-kind, quirky comedy “Groundhog Day” (1993), recognized as a modern classic by the British Film Institute.

Even though you may have seen this film before, this event will help you view and understand several of the underlying themes that make it such a memorable and important film. The activities of a single day are not the only obstacles the protagonist Phil Connors (Bill Murray) must survive but also the daunting personal struggles of self realization, redemption, and finding the meaning of life. Approximate running time for the movie is 90 minutes.

Randolph Community College Electrician Assistant Course Set to Begin Jan. 17

Students in Randolph Community College’s Electrician Assistant Certificate Program are uniquely positioned to take advantage of a situation developing in the electrical field, according to instructor Mike Whitt. “The average age of an electrician in the state of North Carolina is 55,” said Whitt. Those students in training now will be poised to take over for the slew of electricians who will be retiring in the next 10 years, he said.

Randolph Community College will hold a ribbon-cutting for a classroom addition at its Emergency Services Training Center on Friday, Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. RCC President Robert Shackleford will give a welcome, with remarks by Harold Holmes, chairman of the Randolph County Board of Commissioners, and Mac Sherrill, chair of the Randolph Community College Board of Trustees. Brian Causey, director of the ESTC, will also speak.

The 2,800-square-foot brick addition contains three classrooms that can be converted into one large meeting area, two small offices, and bathrooms. The cost of the project was approximately $460,000, paid for from RCC’s Future Undesignated Construction Fund funded by the Randolph County Commission.

According to Anne Hockett, vice president for instructional services at RCC, the ESTC provides training for 20 fire and rescue departments, Randolph County EMS, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, four local municipal police departments, as well as multiple state and federal agencies. “The training needs for these agencies has the facility operating at 98% of its capacity,” she said before the expansion.

The Emergency Services Training Center is located 895 Training Center Drive, Randleman. Take Highway 64 East from Asheboro. Turn left onto East Presnell Street and make an immediate right onto Henley Country Road. Go about 1.3 miles. At the stop sign, take a right onto Old Cedar Falls Road. Go another 1.3 miles and the ESTC will be on the left.

Randolph Community College students, faculty and staff members have numerous collection drives underway for the holiday season.

The RCC Student Nurse Association is collecting new, unwrapped toys for the children and siblings at Kids Path, a program for children ages birth to 18 who may have a life limiting illness or a chronic illness. The collection will end Dec. 5.
Campus Crusaders and Phi Theta Kappa have combined efforts for a food drive to benefit Christian United Outreach Center, Family Crisis Center, and Communities in Schools Backpack Pals Program. The drive will continue through Dec. 9.
The RCC Faculty Association and the Staff Association are collecting gently used or new children's clothing (up to size 16) and shoes. Clothes will be donated to a local women's shelter and CUOC. Shoes will be donated to the Soles for Souls global project.
Inner Strength, RCC's Male Minority Mentoring Program, is conducting a toy drive for Fox 8 Gifts for Kids for the second year in a row. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off on campus through Dec. 2.
The Archdale Center is collecting new, unwrapped toys for Randolph County Foster Children.
RCC's Long Term Care Administration class is working with Randolph Hospital to collect items for pediatric patients, such as coloring books, crayons, children's books, small stuffed animals, blankets, and small toys.

New classes for 2012 include Video Marketing, EMT Career Exploration, Spanish for Customer Service, Spanish for Restaurants & Hotels, and an Animal Care Certificate Program.

RCC's Continuing Education courses include noncredit courses in workforce development, business and industry training, computers, teacher renewal, basic skills, and small business. Salem College Anticipates First Graduates in University Center Program in May/Information Session Nov. 15

The course, which will meet on Wednesdays from 12:30-3 p.m., Sept. 21 through Nov. 9 at the Archdale Center at 110 Park Drive, will introduce the basic techniques in painting as they apply to the elements and principles of design. Randolph Community College Kicks Off Cultural Arts Series with One-Act Play Sept. 22

The Randolph Community College Cultural Arts Committee is kicking off its 2011-12 Cultural Arts Series with David Harrell's one-act play, "A Little Potato and Hard to Peel," on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. in the R. David Harrell was born without a right hand. His warm, smart, and engaging autobiographical one-man show, "A Little Potato and Hard to Peel," is not so much a show about living with a disability, but about the universal experience of overcoming any obstacle. Using humor, candor, and '80s pop culture references, Harrell shares his heartwarming story. This play has been performed in New York (off-Broadway) and in various theaters around the country. As Martin Denton, from nytheatre.com states, "...letting us walk with him in his shoes during this hour-long show is edifying and illuminating. He excels at sharing, at helping his audience explore and feel some of what he has been through. I think we're all of us better for that sharing." The show is appropriate for all ages. Randolph Community College has received a $45,000 grant from the Timken Foundation of Canton to purchase a FANUC Robotics' Certified Education Robot Training (CERT) unit for use in various curriculum and continuing education programs. Randolph Community College officials will cut the ribbon on a new 5,700-square-foot Welding Center at the Archdale Center on Friday, Aug. 12. New welding equipment for the Center was purchased through a $248,222 grant from Duke Energy Community College Grant Program.

RCC will start fall semester Curriculum classes in the new Center on Aug. 15; the school has just added a one-year diploma program in Welding Technology. RCC will also continue to offer Continuing Education certification classes in welding in the new lab and at the Asheboro Campus. Randolph Community College Program Targets Job Training for High School Dropouts

Openings are still available in Randolph Community College's new Career Connections program, which is slated to begin Monday, Aug. 15 at the Asheboro Campus. The program is designed for students who do not have a high school diploma, who would like to earn their GEDs and complete job training in the HVAC/Industrial Maintenance or Office/Clerical fields. Scholarships are available for eligible students.

The career training actually begins in the students' GED classes, as those classes are designed for the students' particular career paths, according to Amanda Byrd, dean of the Basic Skills program at RCC. Students will also receive training in areas such as interviewing skills, resumé writing, and job search strategies. All students will receive job placement assistance through the JobLink Career Center, located on RCC's Asheboro Campus.

Randolph Community College Accreditation Reaffirmed by SACS

Randolph Community College has received official notification from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association on Colleges and Schools that its accreditation has been reaffirmed, and SACS has removed the College from the warning status imposed in July 2010.

"This is great news," said RCC President Robert Shackleford, after receiving a phone call from SACS with the news in late June. "Our follow-up report was excellent and exceeded all of their requirements." The College received the official notification earlier this week.

Electronics Certification Testing Set for July 22 at Randolph Community College

Randolph Community College has been approved as a test site for the Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) electronics certification exam, according to Thomas Jones, instructor for the Electrical/Electronics Technology program at RCC. ETA is a not-for-profit trade association that supports the needs of the electronics industry. An ETA certification signifies that the holder has demonstrated professional proficiency and has the technical knowledge and skill to meet international electronics industry standards.

"Businesses that encourage or employ certified electronics professionals have the opportunity to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace," said Jones. "Certification may not only give professionals the knowledge and skills to perform better on the job, but also enable them to work more efficiently, to require less additional training, and to be more satisfied with their careers." Randolph Community College's Archdale Center will offer a short photography course beginning in July that would be ideal for college students and teachers who are out of school for the summer or other adults looking for a summer activity.

"Exploring Photography With Your Personal Camera" is designed to help individuals take better pictures and feel comfortable using their cameras. It will include learning the best methods of taking photographs, along with editing and printing them. The registration fee is $40.

Randolph Community College Meets "Exceptional" Standards for N.C. Community Colleges for the Third Consecutive Year

Randolph Community College was one of only two community colleges in North Carolina that achieved "Exceptional Institutional Performance (EIP)"” standards for the third consecutive year, according to the Critical Success Factors report released late last week. Randolph was one of 12 community colleges in North Carolina that made "Exceptional" status this year on the annual accountability measures for North Carolina's 58 community colleges.

In addition to meeting or exceeding all eight system standards, these 12 schools met additional performance goals. Those goals were achieving the college performance rates of students who began in, rather than transferred into, the UNC System and attaining at least a 70 percent passing rate for students who sit for a licensure or certification exam for the first time. The accountability measures are based on 2009-10 academic year data.

Randolph Community College Receives Grant to Implement NAM Certification System

When President Obama addressed a crowd at a Virginia community college on June 8, he announced the expansion of a program to allow 500,000 community college students to get industry-accepted credentials for manufacturing jobs that companies across America are looking to fill. President Obama said, "The irony is even though a lot of folks are looking for work, there are a lot of companies that are actually also looking for skilled workers. There's a mismatch that we can close. And this partnership is a great way to do it."

The plan partners the private sector, colleges, and the National Association of Manufacturers, the nation's oldest and largest broad-based industrial trade association that represents 14,000 companies in every industrial sector.

Randolph Community College has already taken steps to become a part of this movement to train a more highly skilled work force. RCC was recently awarded a $26,500 grant from the North Carolina Community College System to implement the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM)-Endorsed Skills Certification System for its Computer-Integrated Machining program.

Randolph Community College Nursing Students Offer Stroke Screening at Merce Clinic June 30

Randolph Community College's Associate Degree Nursing students will provide a free stroke screening from 10:45-11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, at Merce Clinic, 1831 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro.

People at high risk for stroke are those who have hypertension (high blood pressure), poor diet, lack of exercise, and those who smoke, according to Cieanna Hairston, division chair for the Health Sciences and Public Service Division at RCC.

April Thornton & David Jones Win Dancing Trophies at 2011 Dancing with the Randolph Stars Fundraiser

For an encore, it had all of the excitement of a main event. The Randolph Community College Foundation's second Dancing with the Randolph Stars repeated the success of 2010's inaugural event. Preliminary figures reported Saturday night showed the fundraiser had collected over $97,000 before expenses. All proceeds will go directly to scholarships for Randolph Community College students.

April Thornton, director of public relations and development at Randolph Hospital, and David Jones, director of the N.C. Zoological Park, took home the 2011 Dancing with the Randolph Stars trophies by getting the most votes from the community at $10 a vote. Votes were solicited before the event and during the evening at the dinner show held at AVS Catering and Banquet Centre for the second year. Thornton and Jones, who were dancing together for the second year, performed to Elvis Presley's "Fever." The winning trophies were presented to them by last year's winner Bill Hoover, who carried a life-size cutout of dance partner Laura Wilson, who could not attend.

Randolph Community College Archdale Center Adds Two-Year Degree in Medical Assisting

Randolph Community College is currently taking applications for a new associate degree program in Medical Assisting at the Archdale Center beginning fall 2011.

Medical assisting is among the fastest growing job occupations over the 2008-2018 decade, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with employment expected to grow 34% nationwide during that period. In North Carolina, according to the Employment Security Commission, the employment of medical assistants was projected to rise 49% from 2006-2016.

Concealed Carry Training at Randolph Community College June 11 and July 16

Randolph Community College is offering two Concealed Carry courses for students during the summer session through its Corporate and Continuing Education Division. The first course will meet from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. The second course will meet from 8 a.m. -5 p.m. on Saturday, July 16.

The 8-hour class meets the educational requirements so the student can apply for a North Carolina concealed carry handgun permit. Supplies needed are a handgun and 50 rounds of ammunition. The registration fee is $49.

Online voting for the Randolph Community College Foundation's 2011 Dancing with the Randolph Stars closes at noon on Thursday, June 2.

The public can vote for their favorite couple, at $10 a vote, up until noon on Thursday, June 2, at www.dancingwiththerandolphstars.org. For those who cannot vote online, votes can be cast in person at the RCC Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus up until 3 p.m. on Friday, June 3.

Voting has been picking up in the last few days but has not yet reached last year's pre-event totals, according to Ann Hoover and Vickie Gallimore, co-chairs of the Dancing with the Randolph Stars planning committee.

Sixteen couples will compete at Saturday night's event at AVS Catering and Banquet Centre. The couple with the most votes at the end of the evening will be awarded the Dancing with the Randolph Stars trophy. Last year's winners were Laura Wilson, chief operating officer and president of Pyramid Services Inc., and Bill Hoover, retired from RBC Centura and former president and CEO of First Southern Savings Bank. Wilson and Hoover danced a Michael Jackson-style dance to the singer's signature song, "Bad."

Tickets for the event are sold out.

Lane Ragsdale is directing the show this year. The emcee for the event will be Larry Reid, and judges will be Rick Morgan, Lynne Qualls, and Clark Bell.

Randolph Community College Opens Welcome Center

Randolph Community College administration, faculty, and staff celebrated the official opening of the RCC Welcome Center on Tuesday with a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting attended by approximately 150 people.

The new facility is actually a 1,700-square-foot addition to the front of the Student Services Center. It includes a large welcome desk and waiting area, and two small offices, one of which contains computers dedicated to students who need to fill out admissions applications or financial aid forms.

Area residents interested in earned a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice are invited to a drop-in social and information session about the University Center of Randolph County's Criminal Justice program with Pfeiffer University. The event will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, at the Randolph Community College Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus.

Through the University Center of Randolph County, students with an associate degree in Criminal Justice can earn a bachelor's degree through Pfeiffer University without traveling outside the county. "The concept is to make a bachelor's degree more attainable and affordable than ever before," said Neil Weatherly, program head for Criminal Justice Technology at RCC. "We want to help the Criminal Justice professionals in Randolph County reach their career goals."

During the session on June 7, interested students will be able to get information about the bachelor's degree program through Pfeiffer, as well as RCC's associate degree in Criminal Justice Technology. Representatives from both RCC and Pfeiffer University will be on hand to answer questions and assist students with the application and admission process.

Randolph Community College Foundation Dancing Competition Weathers Missteps; Tickets for June 4 Event Going Fast

Preparation for the Randolph Community College Foundation's 2011 Dancing with the Randolph Stars event on June 4 has hit some snags this spring, but the planning committee, RCC staff, and dancers are adjusting their steps to make sure it is the same resounding success as last year's inaugural competition, according to Kelly Heath, grant writer and event coordinator for RCC.

"Unfortunately, some injuries have forced us to make a few changes in the dancing line-up," said Heath. Scheduled dancers LoriAnn Owen and Keith Crisco have dropped out because of a shoulder injury sustained by Owen. That brought the number of dancing couples down to 17. More recently, RCC President Robert Shackleford hurt his foot and had to withdraw. Fortunately, Daniel Smith, a recent RCC Associate in Arts graduate heading to UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall, was able to step in as Julia Griffin's partner.

Randolph Community College Adult High School Diploma/GED Graduation Held May 13

Burke, an attorney from the Raleigh area, was the guest speaker at Randolph Community College's Adult High School Diploma/General Educational Development (GED) spring graduation ceremony held Friday, May 13, in the Asheboro High School Performing Arts Center. Also speaking were GED students Rebecca McArn, Harry F. Cheek, David O. Eckert, and Sheri L. Jones.

The Basic Skills Division holds three graduation ceremonies throughout the year for Adult High School Diploma and GED graduates who finish their studies at various times throughout the year.

Approximately 58 students participated in Friday's ceremony out of 126 GED graduates and five Adult High School Diploma graduates who were eligible in May.

Dr. Robert Shackleford, RCC president, welcomed the crowd and introduced the speaker. The conferring of the diplomas was handled by James M. Campbell Jr., chairman of the RCC Board of Trustees; Anne B. Hockett, vice president for instructional services; and Amanda Byrd, dean of basic skills. Faculty marshals for the Adult High School/GED ceremony were Dora Potts and Aimee Corning.

RCC Student Ambassadors Zach Brown, Monique Chouinard, Casey Lamb, and Emily Smith served as graduation marshals.

Salem College President Susan E. Pauly was the guest speaker at Randolph Community College's graduation ceremony held Wednesday at Asheboro High School. Dr. Robert S. Shackleford Jr., RCC president, gave the welcome, and Shane Bryson, Student Government Association president, made opening remarks.

The Curriculum ceremony took place at 7 p.m., May 11, with approximately 275 students, a record number of participants, walking in the ceremony out of 452 associate degree, diploma, and certificate candidates this year.

The conferring of the degrees, diplomas and certificates was handled by James M. Campbell Jr., chairman of the RCC Board of Trustees. Faculty marshals for the 2011 ceremony were Holly D. Barker, Jennifer L. Macy, and Neilson L. Weatherly.
