Randolph Community College Archdale Brings Back Landscaping, Jewelry Making Courses

Randolph Community College’s Archdale Center is introducing two new continuing education courses in March that haven’t been offered at the College for several years, according to Lisa Bock, director.

“Residential Landscaping and Lawn Care” is a practical course that covers the basic principles of landscape design for either the homeowner or an entrepreneur looking to start a business. This course will meet from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Tuesdays, March 20 through May 8. Cost is $65.

In the second course, “Beaded Jewelry Making,” students will learn the basics of making their own jewelry from instructor Johnnie Springett. The registration fee for this course is $27. The class will meet from 6-8 p.m., Thursdays, March 22 through April 12.

Randolph Community College Archdale Center Offers Basic Computer Software Courses

Randolph Community College’s Archdale Center will offer two computer software courses beginning March 20 that will help students hone their skills in these programs essential to any workplace.

Excel spreadsheets can make personal and business record keeping a snap. In “Microsoft Excel, Basic,” students will see how simple it is to enter, edit, and move information by mouse or keyboard. Discover the easy way to manipulate dollar signs, decimal points and other formatting. Calculations are streamlined with easy formulas and functions. Learn how to use Pivot Tables in order to quickly summarize and analyze large amounts of data. Give your reports a polished look with formatting and printing techniques. Students will need to bring a USB flash drive to save class work. This course will meet from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 20 through April 26. The registration fee is $67; a textbook will be required at an additional cost.

In “Microsoft Word for Beginners,” students will learn to create attractive letters, memos, tables, lists, and even flowcharts for business or personal use. Designed especially for the novice, this course will teach you how to create, edit, save and print documents. You’ll also learn other easy features to make your work look great. You will gain lots of hands-on practice to build your confidence. Students will need to bring a USB flash drive to save class work. This course will meet from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 20 through April 26. The registration fee is $67; a textbook will be required at an additional cost.

Sponsorships Available for Dancing With the Randolph Stars

Plans are well under way for the Randolph Community College Foundation’s 2012 Dancing with the Randolph Stars, with monetary votes going to support scholarships for Randolph Community College students. This year’s event will be held Saturday, June 2, at AVS Catering & Banquet Centre, and members of the sponsorship subcommittee are busy recruiting sponsors at one of six levels. Small Engine Mechanics Class Begins March 10 at Randolph Community College

It’s time to think about getting those lawn mowers, small tractors, and other small engine-powered units out of storage and into service for the spring and summer. Randolph Community College will offer a course in the fundamentals of “Small Engine Mechanics: Out of Storage – Into Service” beginning Saturday, March 10, at the Asheboro Campus.

Randolph Community College Graduate Meets With Vice President & Mrs. Biden

Brenda Lopez Benitez of Asheboro (right center), a 2009 graduate and former Student Ambassador of Randolph Community College, was among a contingent of community college students and personnel who met with Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill prior to their visit at Davidson County Community College on Feb. 24. The group talked to the Bidens about the impact of North Carolina’s community colleges on our state. Lopez is currently a student at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. She was named the Dallas Herring Achievement Award recipient by the North Carolina Community College System in April 2011. The visit to DCCC was part of a tour highlighting President Barack Obama’s pitch for $8 billion in funding for community college partnerships with industry in his recently-proposed budgethat, you have to go to school." The 20,000-square-foot Richard Petty Education Center will house Randolph Community College's Automotive Systems Technology and Autobody Repair programs, doubling the space that each program has in its current location.

Randolph Community College Introduces Courses on Mobile Technology

Does new technology and the proliferation of mobile gadgets confuse and frustrate you? These new devices are intended to save you time and make your life easier, not harder. That’s why Randolph Community College’s Corporate and Continuing Education Division is introducing a new series of courses that will teach you to maximize the use of mobile technology devices in order to maximize your time.

The Mobile Technology series kicks off with “Mobile Technology, Introduction: Beginners’ Focus on Smartphones” beginning Feb. 28. This course, which will focus on iPhones, Android phones, and Blackberries, will cover the basics of text messaging, e-mailing, calling, web browsing, and other uses. Course dates are Feb. 28 – March 15.

Randolph Community College’s Greene Among Finalists for NCCCS Staff Award

Shelley Greene, senior director of marketing at Randolph Community College, has been selected as one of five finalists for the 2012 North Carolina Community College System Staff Award.

In October, nominations for Randolph Community College’s Staff Person of the Year award were solicited from college personnel, and Greene was chosen by the College’s Senior Leadership Team. She then competed against the winners from 30 other community colleges in the NCCCS for the System award. The other four statewide finalists are Don Herring, Coastal Carolina Community College; Darryl McGraw, Wake Technical Community College; Kevin Tyburski, Piedmont Community College; and Dawn Veliky, Halifax Community College. The winner will be announced on April 19 at the North Carolina Community College Excellence Event in Raleigh.
